"Hello?" His confused voice answers the phone the next morning. Justin let me borrow his phone and is standing right next to me, wanting to hear everything.
Mom left already and Justin doesn't work today so this is perfect timing.
"We need to talk, now." my voice surprises me with how venomous it sounded.
"I'm sorry, who is this?" His innocent voice comes through the phone.
"The kid whose mom you broke up with" I say through my teeth. The anger that is coming out of me is like a stampede, and it's not stopping. Part of me feels insane that I'm talking to a professional Grand Prix rider like this. The way I'm talking reminds me of how I spoke after the accident. But you mess with my mom, you mess with me.
"Gina? I'm sorry about what I did but I did it for you." he says calmly. There's voices in the back Round and he's obviously in a public area.
"We need to talk in person, now!"
"Calm down Gina." Justin steps in but I move away.
"Gina I can't drop everything and run, I'm in a meeting."
"You dropped everything and ran on my mother. How come that wasn't as hard?" I ask rhetorically.
"That's not the same, you don't under-"
"Now!"
There's a long pause then in the back round I hear him say "I'm so sorry to disappoint you, as for we've been planning for this all year, but I have an emergency that I can't miss." then there's some complaining and shuffling, then he's back on the phone "Meet me at the diner by Winchester in an hour."
"Ha! No,no,no. You meet me near my house, the diner near my house."
Again there's a long pause but he says "alright." And hangs up.
"Gina" Justin says when I hand him back his phone. "You just bossed around who could've been your link into the big leagues."
I smirk a little feeling like a bad ass, "I don't need a link to get there."
****************
"Good morning Gina" he says with a hint of nervousness as he slides into the booth. Wow, do I really scare people that much? "Good morning Justin" he says. Then he's silent, waiting for me to start.
I never think these things through. I have no idea what to say. No, I have a lot to say but don't know how to start. "Start explaining" I finally say.
He looks at me in shock. He was expecting me to start yelling at him. I'm just one big ball of surprises now aren't I?
"Oh, um..."
"Nothing? Not one thing to say?" I pity.
"I did it for you."
"Did what for me? Ruin my moms life? Tear her apart? And not to mention, you broke up with her at the most inconvenient time!"
"I thought I was the one that was making you hold back in riding!"
"I don't care if you were! I don't care if you weren't! That is no reason to break up with her!" I lower me voice, "Was that the real reason, or was it something else? And I wouldn't suggest lying because I will find out either way."
"Yes, that's the real reason." He says quietly.
"Good" I pull a fake smile despite my hatred for him right now. "So you can fix this."
"I won't if it's holding you back."
"Oh my god!" I complain "Why are you so focused on what I do or don't do? You're not holding me back from anything!"
"Then what's holding you back?" He asks confused.
"Absolutely nothing"
"That's impossible. I've seen you ride! A rider like you doesn't just give up! You've got what it takes to go Grand Prix!"
"And I've seen you ride. By the way, the LA Masters in September. You ruined the combination because you held to long, came into the first jump to close, should've pushed instead of held again in the second jump, and the third jump you didn't even try to get out."
Trying to hide a smirk and chuckle, Justin looks down.
Kent is taken back by how much I noticed in a simple combination. He actually didn't do that bad, he only knocked the second fence but would've went clear if he rode it better.
"You watched it? And noticed that much?"
"Oh don't get your hopes up." I snap. "If you broke up with my mother because of me, you better go ask her the hell out again. If you didn't, then you better not lie to her and tell her the real reason why you broke up with her."
"I can't just ask her out again"
"Sure you can."
"How?"
"You're a big boy, figure it out." With that I decide that I want to leave because I'm bored with this now and a little tired. I'm still haven't fully recovered from whatever Dr. Swan gave me. "Common Justin, let's go"
Right as we are about to step out the door Kent says getting up from the table, "I do love her, and I'm sorry for what I did, I really am."
"Well then you better explain it to her, not to me" And I walk out. I'm tired of people always trying to do shit for me.
The drive home was silent except for the accastonal chuckle of Justin recalling how I just treated Kent. Now that I think about it, even if I was the best rider in all of the Milky Way, Kent, being ranked number three rider in the world can say one bad thing about me and have my riding in the toilet. Not just my riding career, if I wanted to become a trainer, barn manager, barn owner, or anything horse related would be forever gone.
