I stepped into the all too familiar apartment, the smell of cigarettes and Air-Freshener filling my nose. I smiled a bit. Although I hated the smell of cigarettes, it smelled almost the same since the last time I had been here. The only difference was that my mothers perfume no longer filled the air as well as that of cigarettes and air freshener. My brother had always smoked and then fe-breezed the apartment afterwards in an attempt to rid the air of the smell due to the fact that my mother absolutely hated it. I guess it just became a habit at this point since she was no longer here to yell at him when he didn't oblige.
"Cheryl?" My brothers voice echoed through the apartment once I had set my small luggage down on a chair, walking towards the living room where the faint smell of cigarettes burned my nostrils.
"Charlie!" I smiled as he got up to hug me, "It's been way too long, sœur" he said as he held me as if I would drop if he were to let go. I saw a pack of Newport on the table and a can of febreeze in the corner of the room, set on a tiny table to the far right. I knew it.
"Savannah is coming over later." He said once I pulled away, the smile dropping from my face.
"Don't worry sœur, she's changed." He said once he noticed the change in my expression "She's still the same Savannah she was when you were like fourteen." He smiled a bit "Trust me, she's better now." I nodded slowly. I trusted my brother, "Okay." I forced a smile before trailing off to talk about whatever.
"How was... New Orleans?" I raised a brow, trying to remember where it was that he had traveled too.
"I went to Texas you dumbass." He laughed as did I, "It was good."
"How long has Savannah been out of rehab?"
"Two months." He said and my jaw slightly dropped.
Two months. She's been out for two months and hasn't even called or sent a text? What a great sister.
"I'm 'gonna set my luggage in the room." I said before I went to grab the luggage, heading towards my old bedroom.
I let out a sigh, starring at the old chipped paint on the walls of the room.
I smiled to myself as I ran my fingers across the familiar wooden vanity, seeing pictures of my mother and I around the mirror. I grabbed one of them, examining it before heading out the room and into where my mothers once was.
After she passed, my brother never did much to the room besides move out some of her things. I guess neither of us were ever ready to 'move on' from her passing.
My feet found their way to her bed, even after all this time it still smells like you, I smiled to the best of my ability as a tear trickled down my cheek.
I quickly wiped it off before I stood up walking towards the door knowing I'd need to get out of the room if I didn't want to have a meltdown. "God, I miss you." I whispered, taking one last glance at the room before shutting the door.
