"Get the medjacks! And hurry!" I could hear Newt's voice shouting to the boys around him, a slight panic rising with each word. "It's gonna be okay, uh- you'll be fine don't worry." I could just about feel his arms still around me, his voice slowly melting into nothing. I could feel that sense of drowning again, where everything became muffled and a thousand miles away. I felt someone lift me into the air, presumably Newt, and as my head tilted to rest and his chest, I slipped into darkness.
Footsteps. People talking. Anger and worry in their voices. A door being opened. My mind came back to the glade and then slipped back under, hearing fragments of conversation.
"Are you being serious?"
"I don't know how she managed it."
"Is she stung?"
"Newt why are you being like this?" My brain began to hurt, reminding me of the pain that was shooting across my entire body. I needed it to stop. As someone put me down onto a bed, I drifted off completely, no longer rejecting the pull of sleep.
Minho's POV
I ran next to Newt as he carried (y/n) over to the homestead, knowing I didn't have the place or right to complain about any pain or tiredness I felt. The thought of what might've happened if I hadn't got to her in time.. I didn't even want to think about it. I should never have even taken her into the maze or let her run away on her own. I felt guilt growing in my body, giving me this strange sick feeling.
"What was she doing out in the maze?" Newt turned to me as we jogged. I knew he wasn't going to like my answer.
"I took her out there. She said she needed a distraction." He almost stopped but realised he needed to keep going, if (y/n) wasn't in his arms I had a feeling he would have punched me. I could tell he was annoyed by the look on his face. He seemed to be reaching round his mind, figuring out what to say.
"Are you being serious?" he threw as much venom into that question as he could, I could tell. "So you couldn't have distracted her with something safe that's in the glade? You decide to, you know, casually take her out into the maze when the doors are due to close soon?"
"The doors weren't due to close soon, we would have been fine if it wasn't for the griever. I'm pretty sure she fought it all by herself, I don't know how she managed it." I genuinely couldn't, it must have taken so much will power and strength to keep going, no wonder she nearly passed out.
"Wait. She was alone?" I didn't know what to say. I couldn't tell him that we nearly kissed. I felt a lump grow in my throat as his eyes burned into the side of my head.
"She ran off, she said she wanted to be alone," I didn't look at him but I felt his stare intensify, shooting daggers at me.
"And you let her?! She could have died Minho! How could you be so stupid?" I finally looked at him, anger rising in myself. His face was red and his veins popped out of his skin, the anger mixing with the heat and the running.
"I know that Newt! I know! You don't understand how bad I feel, how scared I was for her!" I snapped back at him. He gave me a sympathetic look.
"I'm sorry. I'm just worried." I didn't say anything back, just smiled sadly at him and carried on jogging to the homestead. As we walked through the door, we were met with Thomas and Gally who had gone to alert the medjacks of a new patient. Thomas ran over, putting one of his hands on (y/n)'s face, shaking his head with worry. I felt a pang of jealousy spark in me but pushed it away, now wasn't the time.
"Is she stung?" Gally looked between me and Newt, nervously waiting for the answer. Out of all of us, he knew what the changing felt like.
"I don't know, we haven't looked. I really hope not," I said. At that moment we all realised that we did need to look, an awkward silence washing over us as we glanced over to each other, as if we were telepathically trying to figure out who should look. Alby came down the stairs to join us.
"Well one of us needs to look," he broke the silence, obviously overhearing over conversation from up the stairs, "we need to make sure she's safe. If she's stung and we don't get her the serum soon it could be fatal. You all know that." Alby was all business but the awkwardness still hung in the air.
"Newt maybe you should do it," I offered. He shook his head.
"I can't. It's weird. And saying that, I can't look after her while she's in here. It's just... weird for me," he looked at her and got this uncomfortable look on his face. I looked at him in disbelief.
"She could be dying right now and you're saying that you won't look because it's weird? Newt why are you being like this?" Thomas, Gally and Alby gave him the same look of confusion and shock that I was giving him. By this point he was walking up the stairs, ignoring my question. We all walked into the room where Ben and Clint were, focusing all their attention on the girl that Newt had just placed on the bed. He turned and walked out, leading us all to the landing a few metres away from the door.
"Let them deal with it. I don't want to deal with her," every ounce of care and worry that he had for her when she ran out of that maze seemed to have disappeared and I couldn't wrap my head around what Newt was thinking.
"Right okay. You act like you don't even care," I crossed my arms over my chest. The same look of fiery anger that he had earlier flashed in his eyes.
"Of course I care you shank!" I held my hands up in defence, shocked by the outburst, "She wouldn't want me to, she doesn't care about me like that." I scoffed at him, how could he think like that? He was being ridiculous.
"Yes she does. Don't be so stupid." I said bluntly, I was starting to get sick of this new attitude he had. Alby had walked off but Thomas and Gally stood there, flicking their eyes between us. The tension was filling the room, you could physically feel it.
"Yeah because you know what she's thinking," Newt rolled his eyes. I had enough.
"Well she would have kissed me back if she wasn't still thinking about you!" I threw my arms up, not even realising what I had let slip out of my mouth. It sank in when Thomas and Gally widened their eyes at me. They almost looked annoyed that I tried something. I turned to look at Newt, expecting him to punch me, scream at me, freak out. Instead he just stared at me, a vacant look of sadness and emptiness darkening his eyes.
"So you tried to kiss her?" he said, his voice completely monotone. I let out a breath, realising I had been holding it in my lungs.
"Newt look, I know it's my fault, I'm sorry I just-" he put his hand up, signalling for me to stop talking. I did, looking at the floor as Newt turned and walked down the stairs, then out the door, away from view. Gally ran after him.
"Looks like I need to step up my game then," Thomas shrugged. I looked up at him, shooting him an angry glance. He didn't need to be told, just walked down the stairs and left, leaving me in the gloomy heaviness of the homestead.
