Plot:
Ever since his first year, Hugo Weasley was the reigning Hogwarts wizard's chess champion. He beat everyone who dared to play him. Over and over again, never a losing a single game in the last 6 years. With the start of his seventh and final year at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, Hugo is determined to keep his streak until he graduates. Although, he's confident that there's no one in the school that could beat him.
Until one September evening, when 6th year Ravenclaw Renata Avilla challenges him to a game. Hugo doesn't remember seeing her at Hogwarts before. She was quiet, never standing out, blending in with the crowd. So it's to his utter disbelief when she beats him, taking his title and his crown.
Hugo can't get her out of her mind. How did she beat him? Who was she? What was were her secret? Renata Avilla was a mystery to everyone. But the more he tried to figure out who she was, the closer he got, the more she pushed him away. He can't get her out of his head, and it's driving him crazy. Ever since she said that one word to him. "Checkmate."

- ok sorry that was a really bad plot summary but basically you have a lot of freedom with - Renata is Latina, don't forget her cultural background, it's a huge part of who she is - Hugo's best friend is Lily Potter - Hugo plays quidditch but he isn't that serious about it (lily is captain) - Renata is quiet. She's not shy she's feisty when she wants to be but she mostly keeps to herself - she has to have some sort of secret (like a dark past or a traumatic event that changed her) that she's damaged from and the book is basically about Hugo trying to discover who she is. And when he does he helps her through it
