Stay Cool! -Riles'
Tris Pov:
Tobias pulls into the dirt parking lot with no lines separating the spaces. I pull down the mirror to check my appearance since I've been crying for about fifteen minutes straight- no stopping. My eyes are a bit swollen but they should go back to normal in the next hour. Tobias tugs on my braid as the car rolls to a stop. I ignore him as I wipe my wet eyes. He reaches over and puts up the mirror so I can no longer look at the reflection if myself.
I turn to him a bit angry. He kisses my forehead sweetly. I stay out and cross my arms over my chest. "Stop it." Tobias teases. He tugs on my hair again. Again, I ignore his tiny action. I turn away from him and stare out the window.
Children run around screaming with their friends as they play in the structure with slides, a rock wall, and swings. A square of wood surrounds the playground keeping all the wood chips separate from the multiple shades if green grass. Outside the square are pick nic tables where the children's parents sit and watch.
Tobias grabs my shin and turns my head around so I face him. I shut my eyes. It's better then looking at him. He sighs then presses his lips up gain at mine. I stay perfectly still no matter what he does to me. When he let's go of my chin I open my eyes and look at his sad expression. "You look beautiful Tris. You don't need a mirror to show you that." He speaks softly.
A smile slowly creeps it's way across my face. I sit up straighter then lean over and kiss him on the lips. He smiles against me knowing that he has won me back. I pull away a minute later and look into his eyes. The swirls of color are mesmerizing. All different shades of blues. A dark navy color lines the outside containing the mixed colors inside. One the inside of his iris, the colors blend together to create a bright aqua. The color of the ocean.
I snap out of my daze when Tobias leans in and kisses the tip of my nose. I giggle then pull away so there's more distance between our faces. "Let us go climb a tree." he tells me. I nod my head then turn the other direction and push open the door.
I step outside and shut it behind me. I meet Tobias in the front if his car. He takes my hand and guides me along the dirt path that separates in two so surround a lake. We walk hand in hand with our mouths shut. It's peaceful listening to the screaming children, the birds chirping, people talking, and the wind making the water ripple. Tobias and I walk around the lake for a few minutes until he pulls me off the trail. Right away, I know where we're heading.
Into the woods.
Tobias walks in first, creating a path for me as he goes. He's so kind. I drop his hand and push back bushes and other plants that are in my way. We walk about twenty feet into the forest when I cut myself. I wince in pain as a low branch from a tree skimmed up against my wrist. Tobias turns around and faces me hearing my very quiet almost not audible cry of pain. I clutch my wrist to my chest with my other hand covering it.
It stings real bad. I can already tell it wasn't enough to split my skin open but it was enough to remove at least one lawyer of my skin. "Let me see it." Tobias reaches out towards me. I take a step back from him.
"I'm okay." I speak quickly in a higher pitch then normal. "It's just a tiny scratch. Nothing to be worried about." I reassure him.
He takes a step towards me and grabs onto my hand covering up my scratches wrist. I haven't looked at it myself. He pulls it away and drops it at my side. Then his hand comes back up and grabs it. He hold my arm up just a tiny bit and turns it so he can see what damage there is to it. He let's his head drop and kisses it for me. I smile. "All better now?" He asks me. I nod my head he laughs.
Tobias drops my wrist and I hold it up to look at it myself. A single red line crawls down my wrist a good two inches. Not to, too bad. Tobias drapes an arm around me and holds me close as we start walking further in.
We stop when Tobias finds the perfect tree to climb. "Go ahead." He tells me and drops his arm by his side. I take a few steps forwards and look up, scaling the tree. How the heck am I supposed to climb this thing? I look back at Tobias. He's smiling at me.
"Tell me how at least." I beg him. He shakes his head and crosses his arms. His feet are alined with his shoulders. I look back at the tree. There's a branch about a foot out of my arm's reach. That's the lowest thing to the ground that I might be able to grab onto.
I take my leather jacket off and toss it to Tobias. He catches it for me and holds it in his arms as I bend my knees and prepare to jump. I count to three and extend my legs and push off the ground. I hold my arms above my head with the branch in sight. I feel myself start to be pushed down by gravity. I hit the ground back in my feet. Tobias snickers behind me, trying to keep it hidden the best he can. He's doing a terrible job.
"You try." I tell him.
"Nope. Give it another go." He tells me. I sigh and he chuckles at me. I push it away and jump up again. This time I catch the branch. Now I'm dangling a good foot off the ground. Tobias applauds me. I try to think what I should do next since I'm suspended in the the air.
I look to my left and right and find another branch about a foot up. It's too thin. For sure it'll snap with my weight on it. I turn myself sideways and swing back and forth until I can bring my legs up and hug the branch. Tobias laughs at me. He doesn't even bother to hide it this time.
"Oh shut up!" I squeal. He laughs even more. Somehow, I manage to pull myself up onto the branch. I sit on it and look at Tobias. He smiles at me.
"That's a good start." He tells me. "But keep going so I can get up there with you." He tells me. I grab onto a branch and pull myself up onto my feet. The branch shakes beneath me and I get scared. I quickly wrap my arms around the trunk of the tree and press my cheek up against it.
"Don't be afraid if it moves. Keep your weight centered towards the trunk as that is the tree's strong point. The further out you go the weaker and flimsy the branch will be." Tobias gives me a tip.
I nod my head and slowly pull away from the trunk. There's a branch not to far away. I hold onto one branch and carefully move to the next. Then I move to another one up even higher.
When I look down I don't see Tobias. Where could he have gone in a minute? Not to far, I know that for sure. I hear rustling if leaves and look beside me. There's Tobias in the next tree over. My jacket on a lower tree branch. "Stay where you are. I'm jumping." He tells me.
Is he crazy? No way in hell am I going to let him jump. "Please don't jump." I ask him. He finds a branch to grab for when he jumps. Hearing my voice draws his attention back down to me. "I don't want you to hurt yourself." I try to reason with him.
"Close your eyes." He tells me. There's no point in saying anything else. I close my eyes like he tells me do and push my body up against the tree trunk. I hear a rustle of leaves again then the snapping if a branch. My eyes pop open and I look over to where the was perched on the branch a few feet above me. Half the branch is gone now. "Tobias!" I scream.
"It's okay Tris. I'm right here." I turn and find myself face to face with him. He wedges himself into multiple branches so he won't fall if he doesn't hold on. I reach out and he grabs my sides. He helps me over to the same branch he's on.
I lean up against him and wrap my arms around his back. I press my face into his chest. He scared the shit out of me. I was worried he had fallen. "I swear to god if you do that again-" he cuts me off by covering my mouth with his hand.
"Keep quiet for a second." He tells me. I nod my head and keep my mouth shut. What has he heard or seen that capture's his attention. I carefully turn around and press my back onto him. Tobias clasps his hands over my stomach. I put my hands over his and shut my eyes listening for anything bizarre.
Then I here it. The clank of mental upon metal. A twig snaps not to far away and I flinch. I cover my mouth with my hands to keep from making a noise. I open my eyes and find a man walking around on the ground in a uniform. A uniform? Where did he get a uniform like that? And why is he wearing it?
Questions rise in my throat. Tobias pulls me back with him to try and hide against the tree. "There here somewhere. I just don't know where they coul-" his voice cuts off.
"I've found something." The man speaks. I watch as he grabs my jacket and sniff's it. "Definitely the same perfume Tris uses." I tense at my name.
Why is this man looking for me? Wait, he said they. So that must mean Tobias too then. I close my eyes again and imagine a happy thought. Tobias has his arm's held tight around me as we stand together on a balcony over looking the city. Street lights separate the streets from one another. It looks like a map. Then there are the building lights. Some flash where as others are colorful. Most are white, gold, or silver.
It sounds quiet. Like the entire city is on sleep mode, except for the occasional honk here or there at an intersection. Tobias moves his hands up from my waist to drape them over my shoulders. I tuck my elbows to my sides and grab a hold of both his hands.
I feel his head rest against mine as his heart soars from behind. We're both breathing lightly from the moment as a cool gust if wind blows past us. Tobias moves a piece of hair out of my face and tucks it behind my ears so it doesn't block my vision of the land below.
Somehow we're rising from the ground like a skyscraper. We keep moving up and up and up like in an elevator except we're on a balcony leaning over a railing that keeps us from falling.
Eventually the city fades and we reach the clouds. I reach out and touch it's soft and fluffiness. It feels cool as it passes through my fingers. A person emerges in front of us. My mother. Now why would she be here?
"Go." She speaks softly. Her hands clasped in front of her. She wears a long white robe that drags on the ground behind her. A silver rope is tied at her waist and left to hang loose. One piece longer then the other. Her hair is curled and hanging past her shoulders.
My mother has never grown her hair longer then her shoulders. Not any time while I was born. She always had it straight too. Not once have I seen it curled. Is it longer and curled now that I left? It can't be. This doesn't seem right. "Run Tris." My mother speaks.
I scream as I feel myself fall to the ground. Tobias is long gone by now. Disappeared. I brace myself to hit the ground in a few seconds.
