In my opinion, besides good quality content, spelling and grammar is THE most important part of a book on Wattpad. You don't have to worry about it when buying a book that has been professionally edited, but keep in mind that many people will read the first chapter as a test run, and if it is AMAZING yet filled with errors, they may remove the book from the library.

This is preventable.

1. Grammarly

Grammarly is a free program that can be installed as an app on your phone or on your computer browser. It will underline and call attention to most spelling and grammatical errors. It is a very simple program, but it makes a HUGE difference. Get it. Spelling and Grammar is not optional.

Make sure it is set to what you want to write in, for example:

Canadian English

American English

British English

Australian English

2. Self-Edit

Do not publish your chapters before reading them over at least one time. Spelling and grammar does not matter in a rough copy as long as you, or an editor, are the only one reading it. Why display something that isn't your best?

3. Ask a Friend

It is a great idea, if you have a trusted writer friend, to be each other's alpha readers. This means that you read each other's rough drafts and edit them. A different perspective is very helpful to have. If you don't know a writer, find one! There are so many writers groups on Facebook with hundreds on thousands of people who are willing to help/trade if you only ask. You could probably find someone on Wattpad too.

I suggest using Google Docs to edit someone else's work. There is a suggestion tool that is very helpful in editing.

4. Learn

There are so many free writing resources online if only you look for them. There is always room to improve, ask the people who have made it. Reading, in my opinion, is the best way to learn. Read what you like to write. Read what you don't like to read. Read everything.

-read a book

-watch youtube videos

-take a free class

-read an article

-read Tumblr writing tips/prompts
