I stood up from my desk as the bell rang. Bio had been as boring as ever, but lately I hadn't been falling asleep, which was somewhat impressive. Slinging my backpack over my shoulder, I walked out of the classroom. I passed people in the hallway, but for the most part I ignored them. I was trapped in my own lethargic little world. The thought of open gyms later made me sigh. I really didn't want to go, but I knew that I needed to. I didn't want to make the coaches think I was lazy and stop going right as they started to acknowledge that I was a good player.

I stood in front of my locker, shoulders slumped slightly. It was the Friday before MLK day, which meant that we had a three-day weekend, but somehow not even that could brighten my mood.

"Earth to Soph," I heard behind me.

Turning around, I smiled a little. "Hey Alyssa."

She tilted her head slightly. "You good?"

"Yeah," I sighed. "I just don't want to go to open gym."

"Oh," she said, waving my statement aside, "they're cancelled for tonight."

"Really?" I asked, worried she was getting my hopes up.

"Yeah."

"Thank Jesus."

She rolled her eyes. "Thought you were all about impressing the coaches? And besides, you get to see Ari." She winked at me.

I shoved her playfully, saying, "It's not as fun. Especially since I have to deal with Madi."

"Yeah, I can't believe Coach didn't see the shit she pulled last week."

"Me neither," I said, shrugging. "I'm over it though."

She raised an eyebrow. "You never cease to amaze me."

I smirked. "Why's that? I mean, outside of my stunning looks and witty personality."

"Can you drop the arrogance for one second?" she asked, but I could tell she was trying hard not to laugh.

"Hmm," I said, pretending to think hard about her question, then shaking my head. "No, I don't think so."

Now she pushed me a little less gently, my back slamming against the lockers with a crash. "Shut up."

"That's hot," I told her, joking. She blushed deeply, but she put her hand over my mouth to stop me from saying more. "I mean it!"

I sighed in fake annoyance, then nodded. She pulled her hand away, watching me carefully to see if I would push my luck, but I didn't. She nodded, satisfied. "Since open gyms are off tonight, I'm hosting another party. And you're coming. Savvy?" she finished sarcastically.

"Another one?" I said tiredly.

"Yes."

I nodded and gave her an exaggerated bow. "And what time should I be there, my lady?"

She crossed her arms in annoyance. "You're impossible."

"As you never cease to remind me."

"Stop it," she said, "or I'll uninvite you to my party."
