Samantha sneezed, placing her hand on her ruffled hair, her eyes were full of tears and she was a shadow of her former self. She could hear no sound yet and the door in the one-room apartment where she was kept in was ajar. She had cried her eyes out , she wished she escape or find something to lay her hands on to cut off the ropes tied around her arms and legs.  The tape on her lips was much worse! She felt herself screaming yet no sound could  ensue from her mouth since her lips were sealed itself.

She had no choice but to resort to eating the little food bought by them.... Them? She was scared at first perhaps the saying "hunger Sabi kill pesin" was true.

"Will Chris just leave me here? " she asked herself, her gaze directed at the door. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw someone come in. She cringed with fear, he approached her, she kept on wondering what a young guy of this age could be doing with these men. He was the youngest but his face portrayed fury and one who was frustrated and dissapointed at how life has tuned out to be for him. As he stepped closer, she could feel him stare closely at her;  silently, he removed the tape from her mouth, she slightly cried out as she sat like a wet dog which just encountered a long and rainy day.
"How has dining and wining in wealth been? And it's clear you are one of those who even eat more than thrice a day. "   he said, pulled out a short stool and sat.

     "I... I..... I.....,"  Samantha stuttered

"And the fame you've got, It's all over the news, everywhere! And is this what living in wealth means? I'm sure you are not aware of how the poor suffer. "

         "The poor? "

     "Yeah, the poor? My
joy would be full if I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth. "

"Contentment is an integral value a man should possess, "

"Contentment you say, it's easy for you to say since your three-square meal a day is complete. Since you don't have to eat eba with watery soup, since you know not what the conductors on streets and the poor face! Since you know not the pain in having none of your dreams and goals achieved or no money to pay for SSCE exams! The rich knows not. "

"Wealth.... To... Y..o...u means a lot I guess and you know not of the saying.. The rich also cry. "
"Their tears are nothing compared to the poor who languish in poverty and dearth all day! "

"I'd choose peace over wealth! "

"Peace my foot! You say that for you are wealthy! "

"I know not of the pains you live up with, I know and I bought up ritel to help the poor...?"

      "Ritel?"

"Yeah.. Ritel, I could tell you more.. If you permit and you can tell me more about you. "

       "Me? I am nobody."

"That's what you believe you are? Inferiority complex or what? I do see you as a somebody and I wonder what you do here, "

" You can't understand, You've been wealthy all along, you can't! " retorted Ebube still wondering what this rich woman has to say, if the rich also cry,  if peace surpasses wealth. A 30 minute talk with her was like a soothing balm on a fresh wound.

"Wetin you dey do for here?" the loud, coarse voice of sharpshooter jolted him into action as he realized he had sat for long with the ruffled rich woman kidnapped by them.

      "I just dey here. "

"Oga dey call you for Arena,"

Ebube fixed a last glance on Samantha Benson as he silently took his leave wondering if the saying the rich also cry is really true?

Sam Okpor could swear he has never seen his friend brood this way before, his face had lost the mirth and laughter it once had with lines of worries on his forehead and the far away look on his face. These were scary and more worrisome to him, he settled down on the living room couch as he pat his friend gently at the back. To him, he ought to show more concern this time around  as he wondered if he could ever had his friend back. He terribly missed their jokes, stumping down his feet on the ground when he remembered they had missed a football match earlier, never has that happened and they have never bargained for such before!

"That was the end, I sure can't bring him back to his usual self with the lady still being kept in the kidnapper's custody. " he concluded.

"Guy, has her husband decide to pay the ransom yet! E don agree? " he asked, hoping his question do has the "concern tone" it ought to have to approach his
friend.

"That fool-hardy man! He's just too cruel,  I guess he's involving the police now. But he do value his money more than his wife! I wonder if he ever loved that lady at all, love with no sacrifice is nothing! "

" He's still being stubborn ? Well, he ought to involve the police but these guys could be risky, what if they kill the lady before intervention?"

"And that's my fear! I don't wanna lose her. "

"Guy! calm down. Even  the husband no care, the police will surely know how to go about it but that ransom is needed too. "

" You know nah, I've got only 50k in my account, wetin I get! I own nothing, guy just dey hustle. "

Sam Okpor laughed as he listened to his friend .

"You no get money and you dey involve yourself on top money matter, na millions we dey talk about oh, no be Naira, "

"Forget jhurr! That lady worth more. " said Tobi Bernard as he laughed along with his friend after whisking the glasscup filled with Brandy from the living room glass table.

              * ******

As he settled down on the mat outside, he nodded. The popmusic coming from the barber's salon beside their home was enlivening. It was night already yet the street was full with its usual hustle -bustle. He sighed when he realized he just had an argument with his mother over he, coming home later. He shrieked with fear when he realized what had happened earlier at the Arena. He had looked into Jasper's eyes, confronted him and told him he could back down for he need no trouble for himslf and his family. He had been shocked by what he said for they, kidnapping Samantha Benson was all over the news and his heart nearly  fell off his mouth when he heard the police being involved. It was two weeks after his talk with Samantha and he wondered if his life could change with the Ritel she mentioned.
Jasper had spat on his face and called him a coward. A freaking coward, he had called him.

He sat, ruminating on how he could help the rich lady free from her captives, he spotted a Fly on his thigh, it landed on his foot as he slapped his   foot hard leaving the fly dead with its wings, broken. He smiled when he heard his favourite popmusic being played. Mallam Danladi as usual was speaking in his dialect and at his open shop, he had the fire burning like one organising a barbecue party.

Rolling up the mat spread on the floor, he took it up and had it under his armpit as he hummed loudly and stepped into their one-room apartment.
