She's gonna fire me!
That's it, no more nice job.
Great Kiara, just great!
I kept pacing around the office. My palms were sweaty, but that didn't stop me from scratching it -- a bad habit of mine that I failed to get rid of. Any minute now my boss will walk through that door and fire me!
"Good morning, Kiara," Make it any second.
I watched her walk right past me and towards her desk, holding her black mug in one hand and a folder in the other.
With high hopes to save my job, I explained my reason for being late, "I'm so sorry! My mother called and she kept talking about a fight she saw yesterday in a store. Two old ladies were shouting and pushing each other over the last salmon. Five workers had to-"
"Kiara! Hushhh," She sat down in her chair and started rubbing her temples.
Great! I'm frustrating her. I'm just begging to lose my job at this point.
"I called you here to tell you, you'll be leaving us today." She said it with a smile as if this was something she'd wanted.
Even though I saw it coming, I still felt a lump grow in my throat, "Please, I'll never be late again!" My eyes started to water as I walked to her desk, "I'll come an hour early every day. I'll work overtime!"
Tears were falling from my eyes and I was already sniffing. Yet, I still tried to keep a confident look, hoping she'd give me a second chance, "I really need this job." At this point, my cheeks were wet with tears and I didn't even bother to wipe them.
Getting this job was a dream come true. Working as an accountant in the city's most well-known Company was a plan from my first day of college. I've been here for barely three months and I'm already fired.
My boss ━ well, ex-boss ━ Janice Walker, stood up with an even wider smile than before. She seems really glad to get rid of me. Was I that much of a bad employee?
"I haven't even told you the good news yet". She walked around her desk, "This morning the mayor gave a surprised visit. You missed it," Her narrowed stare made me return a nervous smile. "But, he didn't miss you." I raised a brow in confusion.
Janice handed me the file she walked in with. "He checked employee records and performance sheets. The mayor thought your marks were brilliant!"
I looked at the first page of the file, "This is a lie." I said in disbelief as my eyes kept reading over ' Kiara Nills. Executive Assistant '.
Janice laughed and hugged me tightly, "It's not a lie, Kiara. Congrats! You're now the Mayor's executive assistant."

- Present -
That brings us to today. Earlier this week I made it to one month of working at the Mayor's office. I did love working for Janice, but I just couldn't pass up such a profitable opportunity. Plus, she was really happy for me.
Working here was surprisingly easy. The mayor was kinda chill. He wasn't friendly to the employees, but he wasn't mean either. He was all about giving instructions and leaving us to do it.
Speaking of instructions!
I quickly walked towards the meeting room, holding a pack of cashews. I just need to fill one more bowl and set the table with the necessary papers before the meeting starts. Walking up to the one-way glass doors, I saw it slightly ajar.
"Please don't let there be someone inside," I whispered to myself with my eyes closed.
I didn't bother opening my eyes when I pushed the door open. I waited, standing in the doorway. If someone is in here they'd have said something ... right?
Maybe no one is in here. Just as I was about to open my eyes, I heard what sounded like a snack pack being opened.
I slowly opened one eye, then quickly opened the other, "Who are you?"
Before me was surprisingly not a governor, but instead a guy who looked to be around my age. He wore a white hoody with baggy black jeans. His feet were stretched out on the table as he ate snacks with one hand while using his phone with the other.
"Stop eating the snacks!" I scolded with a frown.
He looked up from his phone and raked his eyes over my body before smirking and popping some candy into his mouth.
"Hey, hey, hey!" I walked towards the stranger until I was beside the chair he sat on, "Don't look at me like that. You need to leave."
He didn't seem to care for what I said. His attention went back to his phone as he slouched comfortably in the chair.
Is he really challenging me?
I rolled my eyes, "I am not moving you. Get up."
"And what if I don't want to, Ms..?" He asked with his eyes still on his phone.
I lifted my chin and folded my arms, "Ms. Kiara Nills, the Mayor's executive assistant. If you don't get up, I'll have security kick you out."
The guy sighed and stood up, pushing his phone in his pocket. I took a step back to look up at him as I noticed our height difference.
"Well Kiara, I'm Cole Parke," He rolled his eyes, "The Mayor's son."
