Zoella POV (Present day)
The hospital door swung open as the doctors hurriedly wheeled both of them into the operating room to extract the bullet. Izzy was truly a lifesaver, and I couldn't shake off the memories of the chaos that had unfolded just thirty minutes earlier. Izzy had arrived quickly, accompanied by some police officers, but they were too late to catch Alex, who had already made his escape.
She took charge, helping me with Chloe and her brother, and rushed us to the hospital without a moment to spare. Seeing her was a relief; I felt a wave of gratitude wash over me because without her, I might have lost two people who meant the world to me. As I pressed my bloodied hands against my face, she looked at me with a reassuring gaze. "They will be fine, I promise," she said, but deep down, I felt like a burden to Zavion and Chloe.
I had already caused them enough trouble, and now I feared I would have to disappear from their lives forever. "I hope so... He was shot twice," I sobbed, my heart heavy with worry.
"Do you love him?" she asked, and I couldn't hold back the truth.
"I do, I love him, okay? And I couldn't even tell him that."
"It's not too late," she encouraged. "You can tell him when he wakes up; he would love to hear those words from you." But I felt a gnawing fear.
"I feel like I'm in danger around him."
Izzy reassured me, saying, "Trust me, he's faced worse. He's been cut with a knife during tournaments; a bullet is nothing. He's a fighter, just like mom." Her tone shifted, and I sensed something was off.
"Your mom? What happened to her?" I asked, taken aback.
"She will be fine, I guess," she replied, but her voice lacked conviction.
"What's wrong? Tell me," I pressed.
"She has cancer, and she is going to die," she said bluntly.
My heart sank, and I pulled her into a tight embrace. "You will be fine, Izzy. I won't say you'll be okay right away, but with time, you will be fine... Do you want some chocolate?" I offered, trying to lighten the mood, and thankfully, it worked.
"Where did you even get those?" she burst out laughing.
"I got them outside," I replied, handing her a couple of bars.
"Zavion will be thrilled to have you around."
Would he really? I paused, reflecting on my relationship with him. Things weren't great, and I still had to keep the promise I made to Chloe about slipping away unnoticed. "I'd love that too," I managed to say. Just then, the doctors emerged to speak with us. Izzy hadn't told her dad and brothers about Zavion's accident yet, fearing it would only worry them more.
"We need to transfer them to the ICU," one of the doctors informed us.
"Can we go see them?" Izzy asked eagerly.
"Yes, you can; they're out of danger," the doctor assured us.
"Thank you," I said quickly, rising to my feet. Izzy and I made our way to their rooms, and I headed straight for my sister. She lay there, unconscious and hurt, while I felt helpless. Just as I was about to leave, I heard her call my name, so I returned to her side. "Are you okay?" She nodded.
"What about?"
I shook my head. "I'm sorry we couldn't find Alex, but the police are on it, and his picture is circulating around town... He can't be too far," I told her.
"We'll find him. From what I know about Alex, he's just hiding," she replied, trying to sit up. I gently urged her to stay down, but her determination was strong. "He won't leave New York City."
"Why did you say that?" I inquired, genuinely puzzled.
"His name is all over the news, the police are on the hunt for him, and he hurt the Gutierrez kid, which means he can't just waltz out of town without a care. Do you even realize how much Zavion means to everyone? He's a superstar, a wrestler, and a sought-after model." She chuckled lightly. "Look, I regret holding a grudge against you for so long; I was just being immature and foolish."
"I feel the same about you too, and I regret wishing you harm," I admitted.
"I've already forgiven you, so please, don't go anywhere. Stay here with me and Zavion. He cares about you, I can see it, and do you even understand what it's like to be with someone like him? He's one of a kind."
"No, I've made my choice; he'll be fine without me. Besides, I'm not good enough for him. He'll eventually notice you, Chloe, just take my spot."
"I don't want your life; it's too messy. I can't believe three brothers were into you," she scoffed. "I know I'll find my true love one day."
"You will, you're beautiful, even if you're not the brightest," I joked, and she shot me a look before bursting into laughter with me. "You're an amazing writer, and now's the time to chase your dreams. You're only 23, so when you get out of this bed, make sure you go for it. Go to college if you want and write whatever you want."
"I will, and you better enter those cooking competitions and also go to college too. If you want. I heard from Eva that you wasted all your years trying to earn money so you pay for my hospital bills. You are the best sister anyone could ever ask for, Zo. I'll always be your biggest supporter."
"I know that... I love you, sis," I replied warmly as I hugged her tightly.
"I love you too, now go on and chat with him; he's waiting for you." She waved her hand as if to shoo me away. I grinned at her and pulled her into another tight embrace. It didn't bother me that she was undergoing treatment; what mattered most was that my sister was finding joy in life again, especially now that Alex was no longer part of the picture.
When I reached Zavion's room, he was still asleep. I caught a glimpse of Izzy as she stepped out, and I took a seat beside him. The strong, resilient guy I knew seemed so vulnerable at that moment, but I could tell he was putting up a fight for his life. I hesitated to stay too long, fearing it might bring back the painful memories of what had happened to him that day. I took his hand in mine, something I hadn't done in years, and it felt so right. Just being there with him, alone, felt like it was meant to be.
It brought back memories of our childhood adventures, and I realized I wasn't ready to let go of those moments. I still wanted my best friend back; I longed to express my feelings for him, to tell him how much he meant to me. But deep down, I feared it might be too late for that. I pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek before quietly leaving the room.
