He probably couldn't understand, but she tried for decades; she had prayed him to get help and crawl out of that hole.

What did go wrong? Maybe the wife alone wasn't enough. Maybe his siblings should have cared more for him, when in reality they didn't seem to do much for him. Maybe his children, now young adults, should have been more mature, and help. Actively try, at least.
