"You scared me!" I exclaimed, whispering so no attention would be brought towards us. I watched him peer around the bookshelf, most likely looking to make sure no one was around. He had completely lost any baby fat at this point, his face was skinnier and his cheekbones were becoming more prominent than the last time I saw him. He had grown not in height, but in body size. His shoulders were slightly wider, and he still stood a few inches above me. I wonder if I looked different in his eyes.
"For committing such reckless acts, you should really become more aware of your surroundings." He said walking towards the middle of the bookshelf examining the books. His voice was deep compared to last year. I watched him from a distance not responding to his comment, instead completely entranced watching as he traced the books with his long, thin fingers, his mouth slightly ajar.
He must have felt me staring, seeing as he slowly looked up, meeting my eyes. Although, it took him way longer to meet my eyes than it normally did.
"I am aware of my surroundings," I argued, but the argument had long passed. He scoffed looking back at the books, grabbing a hold of one in particular. I couldn't catch a glimpse of the title, but I did catch a glimpse of a name printed on the cover. Salazar Slytherin.
He did not try to argue, instead, he opened the book and began to scan it. I took the opportunity to once more grab a book and sit on the ground, leaning against the bookshelf. I was still beyond surprised how much he had grown in the past few months.
We sat in silence for a few minutes, reading the books quietly. I was becoming fascinated by the dark arts. Not just because it was a banned subject at Hogwarts, but because of how many secrets it held.
I looked up as he quickly slammed the book shut, and returned it to its rightful place. "Someone is coming," He said shortly looking down at me from the comfort of the floor. I did not move at first, but then quickly stood up, returning the book.
I followed him as we casually walked out of the section and down the stairs as if we were supposed to be there the entire time. "How did you know?"
I looked back to see a man indeed in the section we were in a few moments ago. If we had stayed any longer we would have been caught.
He hesitated for a moment before speaking, the corners of his lips perking slightly upwards. "Intuition."
He was lying, I could tell from a mile away. Before I could press the matter any further, an annoyingly familiar voice rang from behind me. I watched as Riddle's eyes moved from me, to slightly behind me, and irk subtly washed over his face. I did not have to turn around to know who was speaking.
Lestrange.
I scrunched my nose turning around to face Avery, Lestrange, Malfoy, and a few other of the gang members. I backed up so I was beside Riddle looking in their direction, for a moment I did not believe they were going to notice us. They were too busy tormenting a large first-year boy. I hadn't seen the boy before, but he looked as big as a giant.
They hadn't noticed Riddle or me, but I quickly changed that. I walked away from Riddle, towards the group. I held my chin high as I walked towards them, as the bullied the large boy.
"Look at the little boys thinking they are men," I said, a smile growing on my face watching as their faces washed in irritation. "Because they grew a few inches."
The giant like boy took the opportunity to escape, seeing as their attention was no longer on him, but on me.
"Don't make a scene," Riddle warned beneath his breath. I hadn't even realized he had made his way over here. I looked up at Riddle for a second, checking to see if he was serious or not. Of course, I was going to make a scene.
"First Mud Bloods and now first years?" Lestrange asked, prancing up so close to me I could feel his breath, and smell his expensive cologne. He tried to seem intimidating, stare down at me, using his height to his advantage. I simply stared up at him, a teasing smirk on my face watching how worked up the group became, simply by my presence.
"Would you like to duel? I'm quite sure you are capable of asking Avery how well that will turn out," I said shooting my glance at Avery and then back to Lestrange.
"That's enough, you are going to cause a scene," Riddle said, causing Lestrange to instantly back down and turn back to the gang. Of course, I couldn't help the words that slipped out of my mouth.
"That's right, back down and listen to your boyfriend, princess," I said in Lestrange's direction. It almost instantly earned an irritated scoff from Riddle and a cackle from Lestrange.
"What did you just say?" Lestrange asked, cackling in amusement.
"I think you know very well what I said," I could not wipe the smirk off my face, and part of me believed that was what sent Lestrange dangerously over the edge. Lestrange looked from me to Riddle, clenching his jaw tightly.
"I'll kill you," Lestrange threatened before walking away. Part of me wanted to see him try.
