You start your day as soon as the sun peaks over the horizon, today's no ordinary day after all. It's your birthday! And who doesn't love their birthday? Its a whole day where it's all about you. Everyone loves that.
You start the day off with a quick shower then proceed to take about an hour deciding what you should wear today. Once you finally have an outfit chosen you head off to a breakfast date with your mom. It's something that the two of you do every Sunday, like routine. As you make your way to yours and your moms favorite diner you wonder what she has in store for you today.
"Mom, sorry I'm a bit late." You find your mom sitting in your usual booth looking down at her phone at what looks like her email.
"Don't worry about it, honey." Your mom waves her hand still looking down at her phone as you sit down.
"I spent way too long looking for a good outfit for today!" You jingle your diamond bracelet your mom got you last year on your wrist.
"Yeah? What's the special occasion?" Your mom finally looks up from her phone and sets it on the table.
"Haha." You laugh. "Very funny mom, it's my birthday today duh." You search your mom's face and wait for her to laugh as well.
"Right!" Your mom nods her head with a borderline fake chuckle. "Happy birthday baby." She wishes you a happy birthday and pats the back of your hand with a warm smile.
"Thanks, mom." You nod with a smile as well.
The two of your order your usuals and your mom checks up on her email again. You understand that the woman is usually busy, being one of the top defense attorneys in the state and all. But did your own mother really forget it was your birthday today? You could understand t maybe if you had a bunch of brothers and sisters. But no, you're an only child. Just one stepbrother that's married and hardly talks to you or your mom any more hardly.
"So what are your plans for today?" Your mom sets her phone down again when the food arrives and turns her attention to you.
"Not much really." You shrug and dig into your pancakes. "I'm sure the guys have something planned that they haven't told me about." You've had the sneaking suspicion that Adam and the rest of your friends have coordinated a surprise party for you.
"Exciting." Your mom nods and takes a sip of her coffee. "Well I did get you a little something, I'm afraid that there was some shipping issues though. It'll be here on Friday though."
"Oh, that's okay." You shrug. "Thanks for even getting me anything mom." You shake off the further feeling of disappointment.
You and your mom talk and finish up breakfast, she pays the bill since it's your special day, then the two of you part ways for the week with a small hug. You head back to your place eager to find what you are sure is all your friends waiting for you since they all know that you have breakfast with your mom at the same time every Sunday.
"Hello?" You quietly enter your house with anticipation. The lights are all off like you left them earlier. Your face falls however when you close the front door behind you and no one springs out of hiding. "What?" You furrow your brows and prompt a search of the whole house.
You search your whole house and even the back yard only to find that you are the only one here, with the exception of your cat cookie laying in the sun on the patio.
"Where the hell is everyone Cookie?" You look down at your cat as your heart sinks.
You load up your phone and find a few messages saying happy birthday mostly from people that you don't really talk to or family just saying hello to be polite. Sad you trudge back into the house and plop down on the couch with a deep sigh.
