"Happy birthday!"

The screams jolted me awake, immediately igniting a headache. Within seconds, a body was pressing into mine painfully as someone jumped on my bed. I pasted on a fake smile as I opened my eyes, seeing that it was Veas who had decided to assult me.

"Thanks guys, but get off," I gruffed out, pushing at Veas' larger body. It only made him cling tighter.

"C'mon Veas." Multiple hands grabbed at Veas and hauled him off, finally allowing me to take a deep breath.

"Thanks," I breathed, smiling at Robbie and Veas' older sister Vera.

"Of course. Now hurry and get up. Can't stay in bed all day on your birthday," Vera ordered, leading the two boys out of my room and sending me one last smile before shutting my door. My small smile dropped as soon as they were gone.

The headache Veas had caused seemed to be sticking. I hoped it would go away by the time my party started. Thinking of the party had me stumbling out of my blankets and to the window in my room. Pulling back the curtains revealed the sun to already be high in the sky.

I let out a frustrated sigh as I marched towards my closet. It explained why they decided to come in here and force me awake; I had somehow seriously overslept. I picked the first things my fingers touched, a pair of blue shorts and a purple loose top. I knew it would be hot out today and this would do just fine. I left my hair down to save some time, brushing it a few times to detangle it, before heading out the door.

I took the stairs two at a time, following the sound of chattering voices to the kitchen where my three friends were sitting at the bar. They all turned to me as I entered.

"How long have you guys been here?" I questioned, looking at the empty bowls on the counter.

"Since breakfast," Robbie grumbled, "If I had known you were gonna sleep till noon, I wouldn't have bothered getting up so early." Vera quickly hit him in the arm, earning a glare.

"We didn't mind waiting," She smiled.

"Of course you didn't mind waiting. You got to watch Dion all morning," Veas teased, a sly grin appearing on his face as he turned to look at her.

"Shut up!"

I laughed and rounded the counter, finding a bowl of my own to fill with what was left in the pot on the stove. Opening the lid revealed leftover oatmeal. Just as I began piling it into the bowl, the front door opened.

"Happy birthday Dew!" The voice very clearly belonged to my mom. She danced over to me, pulling me into a hug.

"I can't believe my little baby is going to be eighteen!" She sighed, hugging me tighter.

"You're smothering her Mom," Dion said, leaning against the bar.

"Happy birthday," He added, giving me a small smile. I returned it, gently prying my moms fingers off.

"Care to help out?" I questioned, holding out my cold bowl of Oatmeal. Without words, Mom pressed her hands against the bowl, instantly warming the food contained inside.

"Eat up. People are starting to arrive!" Mom spoke excitedly, hugging me one last time before grabbing a stack of plates off the countertop and leaving the house again. Dion stuck around, joining in on the small talk with my friends. I couldn't help but glance at Vera every few minutes to see her beat red face as she tried her hardest not to embarrass herself in front of my older brother.

"I think the party is getting started out there," Dion spoke. We could all hear the sound of chattering voices outside. I sighed, rubbing my temples, knowing that all those voices and greetings were going to make my throbbing headache even worse.

"Are you okay?" Vera asked, reaching a tan arm out to me. This garnered everyone's attention and I quickly threw on a smile. Today wasn't all just about me. Everyone had put a lot of effort into this.

"I'm good, let's go," I urged, tossing my bowl into the sink and following quickly after Dion as he made for the door. He held it open for all of us; a blushing Vera rushed past me to get by and I had to laugh. Dion ignored us both.

The shining sun blinded me for a few seconds as I stepped out into the front yard but my ears were perfectly aware of the loud chorus of happy birthdays. I smiled slightly as my vision adjusted, glancing out at everyone who had come to attend.

I quickly found a place to sit with my little group of friends and allowed people to come to me to say hello instead of walking around myself. I wasn't sure if I would have been able to do that at all today.

The first to approach was Uncle Ocean, Aunt Bryla and their two children. Both the kids had huge smiles on their faces as they pranced up to me.

"Hey Dewy," Uncle Ocean said, ruffling my hair as his wife sat down next to me.

"How are you on this lovely day?" Aunt Bryla asked, her large sunhat almost hitting me in the face as I turned towards her.

"I'm alright, how are you all?"

"We're great! The kids brought you a little gift of their own," She spoke, glancing towards her two giggling children.

"You want to show her what you have Helia?" Uncle Ocean prodded. His oldest child nodded and brought her hands up in front of me.

She opened them to reveal a small blue flower and I couldn't help but smile.

"Tidal and I picked it just for you!" She smiled wide, showing off a few missing teeth.

"Thank you both!" I took the delicate flower from her fingers and waved goodbye as they went back to their own table.

Soon enough, after everyone had said a few words to me of congratulations, people were finally settling in to eat the meal my mom and the others had helped prepare.
