They passed around water during the third fight. I wanted to drown in it.
I stared at my knees a great deal of the time, willing myself to fall into the bench and resurface underneath where I couldn't see anything. But even then the sounds were enough to make my heart race.
When I looked to my left and to my right the people were focused on the match but in some way I could tell they were aware of me. One short glance and the man beside me turned with a smile.
He had dirty blond hair and a quiet smile and he held out his hand as he greeted me. "Hello little cat." He said, his voice calm and quiet despite the loud noise going on.
I shook his hand unthinkingly, it was warm, his grip not too hard and not too light, but as I looked up to smile and introduce myself I saw the eyes on me... well, others were staring at me too but those eyes somehow stood out. Ker was watching me, his eyes like blades aimed at me from across the distance.
I swallowed and retrieved my hand. His gaze never left me, Agrus turned to see what he was staring at and frowned. He didn't look pleased... I couldn't look away. The more I looked at him the more it felt like the distance between us was disappearing.
I wanted to stand beside him but I knew I couldn't. The memory of his scent was filtering into my mind and all I wanted was to run to him and bury my face in his chest. He would be so warm and I could sit on his lap and fall asleep.
I flushed at the embarrassing thought, knowing but somehow not believing that Ker could not have known what I was thinking through sight alone. Then he was nudged, and he turned to face Argus, though Agrus's eyes remained pinned on the fighting cats. There seemed to be a wordless understanding between them and he squinted, glaring off into the distance as he kept his gaze away from me.
There was a sigh, it took me a moment to realise it was from me.
I was lacking on sleep and now all I could think of was returning to bed, curling up in his arms and falling asleep, his scent in the air, his body soft and warm, holding me tightly. I would definitely be able to sleep then.
But instead I was watching two werecats I had never met in person tear a chunk out of their calf muscles to maybe win the match in order to win... me, I suppose.
It was so stupid I wanted to yell at everyone here until they understood.
I couldn't imagine Kerberos in the pit, more than that I didn't want to imagine him there. Why didn't he understand how much I didn't want to see him there? Had I not made it clear enough? No, I hadn't. I needed to make it clearer. Yes... Then he would think of something, some loophole, or I would find one on my own.
When I peeked up through the fringe of my hair I saw a two pumas leap towards each other, I saw one of them managed to bit the right hind leg of the other and not let go and saw the trail of blood as it clamped down and shook his head from side to side. The other cat growled out loud, a different growl, not a warning growl, like I was used to, but something that sounded more like a I-give-up growl, which transcended into a moan. The bell rang and the cat eventually let him go, he transformed quickly, a couple cats helping him out of the pit before the winner was announced.
I felt itchy looking at the scene, part of me felt my heart race and thought maybe I wanted to see more, see it closer. The part of me that felt fascinated and intrigued by it all. I didn't trust that part of me, didn't trust myself not to become enraptured and to fall into the trap that I had been warned of, or rather threatened with.
The bell rang once more, names were announced and two men walked out. There was a bit of whispering before the match began as the wrong name had been called during which time I was able to examine the attractive man on the one end. He was dark, his hair tied back in long dreadlocks, his eyes were bright. He looked calm standing there, it was hard to acknowledge that he was there to fight for me. Nonsensical almost.
