I smirked triumphantly, knowing I got her full attention. I've made many slip ups, but this was completely intentional. Monika wanted to hide things from me, so I'll hide things from her.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" I mockingly reiterated what she said in my unflattering Monika voice. Oh, the satisfaction.
She narrowed her eyes at me as if to say "very mature."
"Well, (Y/N). Care to share?" Monika repeated what I said, but it wasn't mockingly. She said it in her regular tone of voice.
I crossed my arms. "As soon as you tell me the meaning of your poem."
Monika ran a hand through her bangs with a sad smile. "Sorry, (Y/N). I shouldn't."
"Why shouldn't you?" I asked. I guess she still wanted to stick to the script. Perhaps she thought I'd think she's crazy if she told me it's because she believed this world is a simulation? If I was without self-awareness, I'd probably be steered away from her.
She closed her eyes and forced her body to untense from its previous stress. "Nevermind, pretend I never asked." Monika huffed an exasperated sigh and strained a smile. "Anyway, here's Monika's Writing Tip Of The Day!" I cringed at the fact her smile looked so genuine, yet it's fake. She really was a pro at faking confidence, it's almost scary. "Sometimes, when you're writing a poem - or a story - your brain gets fixated on a specific point. If you try so hard to make it perfect, then you'll never make any progress. Just force yourself to get something down on the paper, and tidy it up later! Another way to think about it is this: if you keep your pen in the same spot for too long, you'll just get a big dark puddle of ink. So just move your hand, and go with the flow!" She does her trademark leaning pose with a sweet smile. "That's my advice for today. Thanks for listening~"
After Monika finishes her writing tip, the selection menu pops up again.
[Sayori]
[Natsuki]
[Yuri]
Although I pried, Monika wasn't willing to go off-script. I almost feel like I had interrogated her about it, but it's already too late for apologies.
I wasn't sure who to pick, so I went with Sayori by default. It made sense since I'm her childhood friend in the storyline.
As always, my body moved out of my control. I walked to Sayori and handed her my poem. As if wordlessly shoving a poem to someone was natural, she took the poem with a hearty laugh.
When her eyes started sweeping over my poem, I was finally back to being in control.
"This is really good, (Y/N)!" Sayori ecstatically bounced in place.
"You really think so?" I raised an inquisitive eyebrow.
"Yeah!" A small pause later she continued, "I didn't expect you to actually write one to be honest, but I'm glad you did! It makes me glad you're putting so much effort into this."
"Wow, thanks for the lack of faith. I feel personally attacked." I put a hand to my chest in mock defense.
"Hehe, sorry." Sayori chuckled then went back to inspecting my poem a bit more. "It kind of reminds me of something Monika would write. She actually showed me her poem earlier today in the cafeteria when I asked. I was just too excited! It's so abstract! I learned that word today, ehehe. If I knew any better I'd assume you were trying to impress her with how similar it is," she shook her head, "but that's just crazy talk considering you've only seen her poem style a while ago."
"Ahaha," I chuckled nervously. I had no idea the poem was that detailed. It even copied Monika's style. Color me impressed.
"However~" Sayori grinned smugly as if she found a secret. The foreshadowed teasing of her grin really irks me. "The words you used in the poem really confirms my suspicions. Hehe~ all these words..." her eyes skim left to right, reading every line while uttering specific words, "confidence, popularity, leadership, emerald, piano, president, philosophical, athletic..." she went on and on, basically killing me internally with every word mentioned. "You wrote this to for Monika, didn't you?"
I stared at her and she stared back at me with glistening, mischief-filled eyes. "As a matter of fact. Yes, I did."
Sayori reeled back in surprise at my forwardness. "Oh, I thought I'd have to keep prying, ehehe! So, why'd you write it for her? Tell me! Tell me!" Sayori's voice sparkled with excitement.
With my most convincing tone and expression, I said, "Wouldn't you want to write poems for the leader of your club? I think it's only natural."
Sayori stopped in her tracks, her mouth opening slightly. She looked at me frantically as if she realized something. "Oh my god, you're right! I'm going to start writing poems for Monika now!"
Oh gosh... What have I done? Now the Sayonika ship I've heard so much about is about to happen right before my very eyes.
For some reason this bothered me, but it really shouldn't. If I knew any better, this feeling is jealousy. I'm not into either one of them romantically, so I shouldn't feel jealous over them being in a relationship, right? So why? Why does the thought of Monika and Sayori being in a relationship bother me so much? Or Monika in a relationship with anyone at all?
"Anyway!" Sayori handed me back my poem and took out hers, cutting off any train of thought I was having. "Here's my poem!"
I attempt to delicately take it from her, but she eagerly thrusted the paper into my hand. "Jeez, you're excited," I muttered under my breath disapprovingly, earning me a small chuckle in return.
It said "Dear Sunshine" just like in the game. After I finish reading, I look up from the page. She seemed to be fiddling with her fingers nervously. She probably suspected I'll hound her for making this early in the morning, considering the contents and Sayori's personality, it isn't that hard to connect the dots.
"Sayori?" I smiled.
"Yes?" She smiled back innocently.
"Even though you forgot and made this in the morning, I'm proud of you! You had enough dedication to write it in the morning before breakfast. And knowing you, that's a feat."
I chuckled, getting a scowl in response. "Heeey, it's not that hard you know."
"Either way, no matter what time of the day, I'm glad you were able to make this. I really like it! It takes me back to the mornings, haha!"
"Aw, thanks, (Y/N)." Sayori giggled happily.
Satisfied, I give her back the poem.
