Cuori's POV
Mondays sucked. Everyone was bummed that the weekend was over and the students all reached their peak of edgyness. The plus side to this particular Monday was that I got to watch Jack be a little too extroverted with the new kid. Which brought us to now.
"You think that's him?" Albert asked pointing to a tall, lanky, raven haired boy.
"Probably. I've never seen him around before." I said as the Delanceys walked over to the new kid. See, at the World High new students had a huge target on their back that said 'Hey Delanceys why don't ya beat the shit outta me?' metaphorically, that is.
I saw Jack about to go help him, but Shiner quickly jumped to the occasion.
"Beat it would ya? Can't go a day without being a total nose bleed can ya?", she snapped. I was ready to launch myself at the two brothers if it came to that. Oscar got up in Shiner's face sneering,
"Ya think we're scared of you little girl?" he sneered.
"Oooo bad move." I heard Albert say from behind me.
Shiner reared back her fist, hitting Oscar in the nose and copying the action with Morris.
"I already got a brother callin' me little. I don't need you to do it too." The boy behind her looked stunned as Shiner walked back to our group, the boy following her.
"That was....that was great. Thanks." He breathed out. Shiner shrugged.
"No problem. Someone needed to give it to 'em straight." She stuck out her hand. "Shiner Dasilva." The boy shook it, saying,
"David Jacobs." When their hands met I practically saw Shiner melt. I made eye contact with Albert as we snickered.
"This is Jack, Crutchie, Race, Albert, Specs, Romeo, Blink, Mush, Button, Elmer, JoJo, Tommy Boy, and Finch" Shiner pointed to the group of boys that was with us. I rolled my eyes and stated,
"Since nitwit number two over here won't introduce me, I'll take it into my own hands." I stuck out my hand. "Cuori. Cuori Romano." he shook it.
"It's nice to meet you all." he smiled awkwardly.
"So you're the new kid that Medda told us about?" Jack spoke up. David looked down at his feet
"Uh, I guess?" He said. I laughed a bit more.
"Don't worry, she didn't tell us anything." I said smiling. Race leaned over, whispering in my ear.
"See somethin' ya like Romano?" He teased. In one swift motion I had the blonde in a headlock.
"Ya never learn do ya, Racer?" Albert shook his head, chuckling.
"No. I really don't." Race said through gritted teeth, trying to break free of my hold. I wasn't letting him out that easily...
"I'm gonna walk to class like this." I stated flatly.
"NO YOU ARE NOT!" he yelled.
"Oh yes I am." I calmly replied.
"Oh no you're not." Race continued to struggle as we bickered back and forth. He finally gave up.
"Ti arrendi?" I asked teasingly. He sighed.
"Si" He breathed. I let go of Race and he stood up brushing himself off dramatically.
"Um, what did you say?" David asked Race timidly.
"She asked if I gave up." Race translated. Davey nodded.
"Why did you put him in the headlock in the first place?" Davey inquired, looking at me. Boy, this kid asked a lot of questions.
"'Cause. He was being annoying. Lucky I didn't soak him this time." I quipped, glaring playfully at Race.
"Not the first time C's done it either so watch out pretty boy." JoJo joked. David laughed.
"What?" He chuckled.
"It's a joke, don't take it literally." Shiner patted him on the back. "Hey C? Can I come over tonight to study?" she asked. Oh she definitely likes David. When Shiner wanted to come over and 'study' she needed advice for something, usually something big.
"Sure!" I replied. Albert and Race were the only other people in on the code word. The four of us were practically inseparable.
"Me and Albert have a quiz coming up. Could we tag along?" Race asked. I nodded as the bell rang. Shiner turned to David as the group dispersed.
"So what's ya first period?" Shiner asked him.
"Umm AP Literature." he responded, folding his schedule up.
"Oh, so our new boy Davey's a smaht one?" Shiner rolled her eyes.
"C, both of us have AP Lit." she said, starting her walk to the classroom, Davey, Albert, and I following her.
"Ya get the pleasure of being stuck with us." Albert smiled brightly. Shiner and Albert walked ahead of us a bit.
"Are they siblings?" He asked me, looking at the two redheads chatting ahead of us.
"Twins. Shiner's my best friend, and the two are a package deal." He nodded.
"Anyone else? Or just the three of you?" I sighed. I was really going to have to spill my whole life story to him wasn't I?
"I moved here from Italy in the 6th grade. Race, Albert, and Shine were the ultimate trio. I met Race after beating up the Delanceys and I was quickly 'adopted', you could say, into the bigger group of boys. I became really close with Shiner and, here we are."
Davey nodded as we took our seats in the class. I couldn't help but notice he couldn't stop staring at Shine.
"So C! Anyone ask ya to homecoming yet?" Albert asked. I shook my head.
"Nah." I answered.
"What about Ace?" He inquired. I shook my head again.
"Why would anyone wanna ask me to homecoming?" I stated flatly.
"Why would they not?" Albert leaned on his desk.
"I don't know. But if Shiner doesn't get asked I'm goin' on strike." I quipped. Shiner rolled her eyes.
"Please Cuori, you're beautiful. I can play this game if I want to." She responded.
I swore I heard Davey mumble something along the lines of "Sure, but not as pretty as you". That couldn't have been what he said. Right?
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
"I'm telling ya Shine. He likes you." I insisted. Shiner looked up from the homework she hadn't focused on since we sat down at lunch. She was trying to get her mind off of it, but it ultimately wasn't working.
"I don't know. He's just." she did a weird hand gesture. "Ya know?"
Somehow yes, I did know. Shiner thought Dave was perfect. "Well don't look now but he's coming to sit with us." I smirked. "Hey Dave!" He sat down across from Shiner, next to me. Albert and Race where doing the usual lunch activities of "Catch the slop in your mouth".
"Hey Shiner, Cuori." He nodded in my direction as Shiner turned bright red. I smirked playfully at her.
"So Dave, ya see any girls ya like so far?" Romeo asked, twirling a fry in his fingers.
"I literally just got here." David said "But, yeah." I saw Shiners face drop.
"Oooo! Tell!" Romeo leaned intently on the table, abandoning his fry.
"Hey Romeo, don't make the kid uncomfortable." Jack said.
Davey, not minding Jack, continued. "Well, she's really nice so far. And really cool. She's smart, pretty, funny-" Davey was cut off by Shiner getting up.
"I have to go." She hurriedly said as she dumped her tray and left. David pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Dammit David." he scolded himself.
"Ooo new kid's already swearing." Race quipped. Albert hit Race in the back of the head. That's when it all clicked for me. I shot up from my seat and bolted out of the cafeteria. I raced down the hall and toward my locker.
"Maddie!" I called after the redhead. She whirled around.
"Oh. Hey Cuori." She never called me by my full name. It's always C or some other stupid nickname like nosebleed. She used that one a lot, whether she was joking or she meant it.
"Maddie, what's wrong?" I asked carefully, placing a hand on her shoulder.
"He hasn't even been here for a day and he's already hopelessly in love with someone. And that someone is definitely not me." she replied glumly.
"Mads-" I started but was cut off.
"It's fine C. That girl is really lucky." With that, she walked off, leaving me in the hall alone. All David was being was honest, and I really hoped Albert wasn't giving him crap for it.
I knew my prayers were unanswered when I returned to the lunch table to find Albert about to slap Davey into tomorrow. "No Albert I didn't-" Davey stuttered.
"You obviously did. What the hell? How did you already jack stuff up already?" Albert cut him off.
I interjected in a desperate attempt to advocate for Davey. "Shut up would ya? He was talking about Shine! God Al, for once in his life Race was right when he said ya lost ya mind." Race made a little "Hm" sound in a very posh tone. I rolled my eyes, turning to Davey.
"Sorry about that, Davey. He gets really protective over Shiner." I apologized. He shook his head.
"It's fine! I mean, it was scary at first, but I would be the same way if it were my little brother, Les."
"You got a little brother?" Elmer asked excitedly. He always liked kids.
"Yeah I do." David smiled before proceeding to tell the table about Les and his antics. He was one chaotic child.
