Jase was lying on the bed with his eyes closed when Madison returned from the shower. On the desk was fresh underwear, a bra, and another jumper she assumed was his, with a pair of leggings. He opened one eye when the door clicked shut and looked away when she turned her back to him, allowing her to get dressed in privacy.

Shortly after, the other side of the bed sunk under Madison's weight. She curled into a ball as far away from him as she could. Jase assumed she was doing her best to be quiet, so she didn't disturb him. Good, he thought. Now she was stepping on eggshells. Last night had obviously unnerved her, forcing her to back down.

But Madison was far more complex and his assumptions were slightly off-scale. People had a shorter temper when they were tired, and she was walking a line that didn't need pulling any tighter by things as pedestrian as exhaustion. Her dad had raised her better than that. If Jase needed to sleep, then she needed him to sleep too.
