I'm irrationally excited for this.

Her eyelids closed and her breathing steadied. I sighed before grabbing the scalpel. It was a small incision, then we inserted the tube and drained the water.

It sank into her skin, blood arising. That was to be expected. Towels dampened the area, absorbing the blood.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Normal heart rate.

They removed the towels and I grabbed the tube from the table, ready to station it. Grace watched me from the observation room.

No. That was too much blood. It should've stopped. We dried the area and moved on, noting to save it in case she needs it.

The tube slid her lungs and we began draining the water.

Nothing came out.

A bead of sweat formed on my forehead. Oh gods. Please let her be okay. Then the tube drained her lungs. But not of water. It was then we realized it wasn't water in her lungs.

It was blood.

Her right lung had a hole that was letting in unclean blood. That's why she had trouble breathing, because part of the oxygen was going to the blood.

She's going to die. On my watch.

Beep beep beep beep beep beep. The heart monitor screamed. Grace looked at me, tears in her eyes. Then she looked at Jo. I saw her mouth form the words, "I love you."

Beeeeeeeeeeeeep. Someone grabbed the chargers in an attempt to restart her heart. It was useless. If the shock came in contact with blood she kill herself.

I promised her she would live. I swore on the Styx. No. No. She can't die.

From the time someone's heart stops, you have sixty seconds to restart it. I glared at the clock, watching the second hand touch the 12... And grace it again.

She's dead.

Jess came up to me, engulfing me in a much-needed hug. "She was your first, wasn't she?"

"I killed her."

"No you didn't. There's nothing we could have done."

"I promised she'd be okay."

"You loved her, didn't you?"

I nodded, tears already forming in my eyes. I was vaguely aware I looked like an idiot, but I didn't care. She died.

Grace was in the doorway. "She's dead, isn't she?" I didn't know what to say. Then she laughed. "I loved her, and she died. This wasn't supposed to happen!"

"Grace, are you okay?"

She only laughed harder. "No."

I glanced at Jess. We were now the only three in the room, besides Jo. "Everyone deals with death differently." She said.

I stumbled home, dazed. I killed someone. Her blood was on my hands. She died because of me.

"Nico?" I called through the doorway. He knew that something was wrong immediately.

"What happened? You look terrible."

I buried my face in my hands. "I killed someone."

Well. That was... Intense.

R.I.P. Jo.

I knew this was going to happen as soon as I scheduled the surgery.
