Alexis' POV
School started to feel more and more like something I did as an afterthought to the rest of my life. It took the backseat as drama overtook my life. First, Emanuela and Daniel broke things off. Then she got mad at all of us for just trying to talk her into smoking since she's all of the sudden hugely anti-drug, even after countless sleepovers where we got blackout drunk.
But it wasn't my worsening relationship with Emanuela that really upset me. The thing that made me more sad and scared than anything was my amazing boyfriend.
He would never do anything to hurt me on purpose, but he had no way of knowing how his choices hurt me. It was such a small habit that became such a huge problem, and suddenly we didn't know how to handle it.
My Joey was an addict. He popped painkillers like candy until he was nodding in and out of consciousness. Every night I dreamed that he would go to sleep one night and not wake back up. I tried to talk to him about it just once, but he just got quiet and talked around it.
After this, I had a plan. I needed to get Joe away from Nick, his dealer. I knew Emanuela hated her brother doing drugs, so I needed to convince her to work with me to get our whole friend group distanced from Nick, using one little word. Blackmail.
