The Tao of Striving

If one believes in destiny,
that Fate is our guide,
then falling short does not exist
and cannot wound our pride.
So reach for heaven if you will,
run the races that you choose,
but do not mourn when you fall short,
or the battles that you lose.

Not every man can be a king,
or win each race they run.
We learn from what eludes us
and the things at which we fail.
These are the things which forge our lives
and help us to prevail.

It's not a sin to strive beyond
the life that we must live,
or suffer in our failed attempts
to take what life may give.
The sin is being angry
at those things we can't achieve
and raging at the ones we love
for lies that we believe,
the lie that life's a contest
with odds we'll overcome
and the lie that we can win at all
before our race is done.
