They entered the house in a frenzy, Leta handing off Five to Grace in an instant.
Leta clasped her hands together, looking over at Allison and Diego as they disappeared into the kitchen. She followed behind them, walking to the sink and scrubbing her crimson fingertips until the water ran clear. She sat down at the bar, grabbing an apple and greedily chomping into it. She was starving.
Allison glanced over at her, a small smile creeping onto her face. "So, you and Klaus."
Leta raised an eyebrow at her sister, turning the fruit in her hand. "What about us?" She asked, hiding her face a bit.
The other woman chuckled, elbowing her playfully in the side. "You know what I mean. You two were always close as kids. And you still wear that bracelet he gave you. Besides, I saw the way he looked at you when he got home. I saw the look in his eyes. He loves you." Leta shrugged, grinning down at her hands.
She let out a longing sigh, tilting her head back, "It's the eyes, even if it weren't for the rest of it, he'd always have me coming back for those eyes." Diego let out a retch, Allison a coo of happiness.
"You've got low standards Lee. Klaus? Really?" she shoved him in the arm, nearly sending him tumbling off of the stool.
"Oh shut up. He's different when it's just me and him. He's kind and considerate, passionate. He has never once lied to me. And you have to admit he has some crazy stories. I could listen to him for ages."
"That is so sweet. I'm glad you two are finally together. Ben and I always knew you would make a good couple." Allison laughed, giving Leta a hug.
Her smile stretched from ear to ear. "Glad I'm not crazy."
She pulled in a heavy breath, looking at her siblings for just a moment longer before kicking herself back into mission mode.
"But that doesn't matter. We need to find Harold Jenkins. There was another address in the file, right?" Diego nodded, putting down his glass in the sink. "Let's try that next. I'm going up to see Five before we head out." The two just stared at her with crooked smiles as she headed away and up the stairs.
She knocked a couple of times on the doorframe before entering. Grace sat at Five's side, gently wiping sweat off of his brow.
"How is he?" The robotic woman turned and acknowledged Leta.
"He'll be just fine. After a good night's sleep he'll be right as rain." She nodded, the woman leaving her alone in the room with the unconscious boy.
"Um. Hey Five." She sat on the side of the bed, looking down at his silent face. He was quite cute when he was sleeping. Leta chuckled a bit to herself. That little maniac looking peaceful in his sleep, who would have guessed. "I just wanted to let you know that we're headed out. And don't worry, I'll watch the others. Just get better okay?" Guilt washed over her out of nowhere, thinking about all the chances she had to help him. To keep it from getting this far. "Get better. We need you."She stood, dusting off her pants. And heading out.
"Don't worry Leta, I'll take good care of him." She smiled at the robotic woman, pursing her lips.
"I know Grace. I know."
Leta turned and walked down the stairs, Pogo standing by the front door waiting for her. "Miss Leta, Master Diego has gone with Miss Allison to the car. They asked for me to tell you to meet them."
"Thanks Pogo. We'll be home soon." He nodded, retreating back somewhere down stairs.
Leta shook herself, pulling open the door. A cold breeze thrusting itself inside the mansion. She shivered, reaching over and grabbing a coat off the rack.
It was completely dark outside, the street lamps lighting up every few feet. "Diego. Put your hands up!" Her feet stopped in their tracks, a barricade of police cars were lined up, Diego standing in the middle, spotlights shone right on him.
His hand was reached to the sky, the other still caught in a sling. A gasp ripped from her throat, instinct pulling her behind a building corner and looking out.
"You are under arrest for the murder of detectjve Eudora Patch."
"No. No Diego's innocent. That wasn't him..." her fingers tightly gripped the side of the stone wall. Her heart beat echoed in her ears. No one would believe him, that a pair of time traveling assassin's killed her. They'd take him to the looney bin.
There was nothing she could do. She watched silently as the cars drove away, her brother locked in the back of one. As soon as they were gone she stepped out into the empty street, staring at the spot he had been standing in just moments before. The car was gone. Allison must have run before she was taken too.
She threw down her hand, letting out a cry to the sky. "SHIT!"
Leta moved down the hall, descending down the stairs to the front door.
"Allison? Diego? Where are you guys?" she called, grabbing her coat off of the rack next to the door.
"Mrs. Leta, Mrs. Allison and Master Diego told me to inform you they were headed out to the car and to follow." She glanced over her shoulder at Pogo. He stood with both hands on his cane, looking up at the woman. She smiled, giving him a thankful nod.
"Thanks Pogo. We'll see you in a bit." He nodded in return, the blond woman rushing out the door and into the night air."Pogo, we've got a situation." She shoved her way into the building, looking around for the butler. The elderly chimp walked forward, causing Leta to let out a sigh of relief.
"What's happened?"
"Diego just got arrested, and I think Allison's gone after Jenkins on her own." He sighed, thoughtfully looking down at his cane. "Do you know where Klaus and Luther are?"
The chimp shook his head no, locking eyes with Leta. "They both left in a rush before you and the others arrived home. Master Luther had received some... disturbing news."
Leta knit her eyebrows, kneeling down to be on the chimp's level. "What do you mean, 'disturbing news'?"
*~*
She sat next to the pile of unopened samples, her head held in her hand. "I knew the old man was cruel, but sending Luther away like that. All because of what he had done? How is that fair." Pogo sat on the end of the bed and let out a sigh.
"It is not. But it also was not my place to tell him, until he needed to know." Leta ran a hand down her face, tossing the bag that was in her hand onto the floor.
"So Luther is MIA, Klaus has gone after him. Diego is in prison, Allison is god knows where, Five is hurt and unconscious, Vanya is with a literal psychopath who is potentially the catalyst of the damned apocalypse! And I'm stuck here. Without a lead or any clue of where the rest of my family is. And to top it all off, we have two days to prevent the end of the world. Is that all?" She stared at the chimp, arms rested on her knees.
"Yes, that seems to be correct."
Leta chewed on her lip, grunting as she got up off of the floor. "Great. Just great."
She left the old man alone in Reginald's bed chambers, strolling towards Five's bedroom. He was alone, except for Dolores who was perched on his desk. She pushed a heavy breath out from between her lips, closing the door to keep out a draft.
There wasn't anything else to do except wait now. She had no leads, she had no functioning siblings, she had no time. The world ended in three days and she could do nothing to stop it. So she sat on the top step of the staircase, cracked open a bottle of wine, and waited.
"Here's to the world's worst family reunion." She cheered for the absence in front of her. "Dad sure did pick the right time to die."
