the stroke of midnight;
the unholy hour,
no winds blow and the
moonlight is scarred,
all the fairy godmothers
lose their power,
cinderella is lost,
and snow white falls to eternal sleep,
unfortunate ships are
sinking at gray overcast seas.

fairy wings are clipped and caged,
just half-stories a
child's heart can't take,
the beast is awake and
danger is forthcoming;
a single red rose plucked on a cold night home will be
deeply regretted the next day;
teach your children early on : even simple things come with prices to pay.

the stroke of midnight;
a truly sinful hour,
scheherazade battles death with words; and stories and fables of jinns, kings and queens,
then the dusk comes : she was the first to daydream.

the fear of the night in little kids was sealed when they heard a wolf howling,
monsters under their beds, and keep your casements closed,
because babies are stolen by evil witches who creep up in cradles, scowling and cold,
for years, rapunzel was
kept hidden away :
how do i believe anything
a person will say?

the early rising of the sun; a fresh start,
the prince finds his princess,
snow white finds her kiss,
charon takes withered ships away from hell's abyss,
and maleficent reunites with her wings, fairies feel so powerful again,
beauty loves a man for who he is,
the beast is gone, here only true love wins.

and it's hard to believe but it is the truth,
the evil king becomes good from brute,
happy endings become hard to refute,
but these are fairytales, lives we always wished we lived,
teach your children early on : reality isn't all happy endings and eternal bliss.

the stroke of midnight
still keeps me up,
wishing on a falling star,
i know fairytales aren't true,
but i wish, just this once,
that they were; just for me and you.

a/n : September has been one of the worst months of this lock down for me and the way that things are going just got me thinking about all these magical stories I've always loved since I was a child. I think people always say that fairytales are as far from reality as they can be but it hits a little different when you realise that on your own, and I guess I did.

Thank you so much for reading and allowing this book to reach 500 reads, so grateful :).
