Prom finally came. Parker and I were standing off to the side of the room, admiring the crowd in front of us. The room was decorated with blue and silver streamers. Blue curtains were draped across the walls of the gymnasium. Parker was bouncing next to me, feeling the music and I stood there, my eyes wandering around the crowed.
The theme of the prom was regrets and moving on. It was a tad depressing, but the school council persuaded us by saying that no one goes through life without regrets. High school is a wild experience and we grow and change a lot during high school, which is why prom would be about regrets and moving on from them. This party would symbolize us moving on.
Everyone was dancing ad my eyes soon landed on the girl I was looking for. Sophie was standing off to the side, wearing a dark blue dress and her eyes were on the ground. She was bobbing to the music as well, looking uncomfortable, and I yearned to go after her. I yearend to tell her she was my biggest regret and that I was in love with her and wanted us to fix things, but I knew harassing Sophie to forgive me was wrong. You can't harass someone until they loved you. I knew that, staring at Sophie.
"I'm sorry, Luke," Parker said.
I looked to Parker who was giving me a sad, wistful smile. I smiled back, but it didn't reach my eyes.
"I screwed up," I said. "I deserve this. This is my punishment for being so cruel to Sophie."
"Luke, I know you always have good intentions," Parker said. "I mean, you were selfish when it came to Sophie, but I know you're not a bad guy. And I wish Sophie would give you another chance."
Sighing, I shrugged. I didn't want to be consoled. I didn't want to hear about how I did deserve a second chance. Because whenever I thought about what I did to Sophie, I was horrified by how cruel I was.
"It's okay," I said. "School is ending and soon, we'll be onto new experiences. I wish Sophie and I had better closure, but it's okay. I'm just happy to know that someone like Sophie loved me and I loved her back."
I smiled, thinking back to how Sophie told me she loved me. Despite everything I did, Sophie loved me. Tearing up, I shook myself out of it, reminding myself that even though she loved me, that didn't mean she would be with me.
"Yes, we'll find you another girl in university," Parker said, grinning. "And this time, you better not screw up. Because I will literally kick your ass."
"Don't worry, I learned my lesson," I said, laughing. "No more treating people like their disposable."
Parker's eyes softened. I smiled at my friend, grateful he was at my side. Parker could have gotten a date, but instead he chose to go to prom with me. And forever, I would be grateful for Parker's existence.
"I hate how this is the end of you and Sophie," Parker admitted. "Can't lie, I shipped you guys. You guys had something special."
"Way to rub it in," I groaned. "I know. I regret it everyday."
"Perfect for the theme of this prom. Guess now all you have to do is move on."
Parker smiled at me and I sighed. Moving on was the next step. But yet, it was hard to do. With how I felt about Sophie and how badly I screwed up everything, what happened haunted me. I doubted I would ever get over it.
"Hello everyone," Evangeline, one of the school council members, said.
My eyes flew to the stage at the front of the gymnasium and I grew surprised when I saw Evangeline standing there. Her platinum blonde hair ran down in waves all the way to her hips and she was wearing a short, pink dress. She was smiling as she held the microphone close to her mouth.
