Jungwon had no idea how much he was about to change everything between them.
He’d spent days debating how to tell her. He had built up the courage, knowing it couldn’t stay hidden forever. But in the moment when he needed to make things right, he couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out, and he immediately realized just how wrong it felt.
-
Jiwon was standing with her friends, laughing at something they’d just said. Her smile was radiant, carefree—exactly the way Jungwon liked to see her. But now, when he looked at her, it felt different.
He took a deep breath and walked toward her. He had to fix this.
“Jiwon,” he called softly, his voice shaking slightly.
She turned to face him, but her smile faded the moment their eyes met. She seemed to tense up, just a little.
“Hey,” she said, her voice flat. It was clear something was off, but Jungwon couldn’t place it.
He bit his lip, gathering his thoughts. “Can we talk?”
She nodded, though she didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about it.
They walked a few steps away from the group, and he could hear the muffled voices of her friends as they continued talking behind them. His heart was pounding in his chest, and for the first time, he felt the weight of every word he was about to say.
Jiwon stood with her arms crossed, watching him expectantly, and Jungwon suddenly felt nervous. What if she didn’t believe him? What if it was already too late?
He cleared his throat. “I want to clear something up,” he began, looking her in the eyes. “You thought I liked someone else. But… that’s not true.”
Jiwon’s expression shifted slightly, though she didn’t interrupt.
“The person you’ve been texting,” he continued, “was me. It’s always been me. I’ve been the one messaging you, giving you advice, helping you with your crush.” He looked at her, hoping she could understand. “I never wanted you to think it was someone else. I didn’t know how to tell you.”
Jiwon blinked, her face blank. She didn’t speak immediately.
For a moment, Jungwon was too afraid to say anything else. But then she spoke, her voice soft but edged with something that made his stomach twist.
“Wait… you mean… you were the one I was talking to all this time?”
Jungwon nodded, his chest tight. “Yeah. I didn’t want to make it weird, so I kept it a secret. I was worried if you found out, you’d—”
“So all this time, you lied to me?” Jiwon cut him off, her voice harder than before.
Jungwon’s heart dropped. “I didn’t lie, I just—”
“You didn’t tell me the truth!” Her voice was rising now, and she stepped back a bit, crossing her arms tightly across her chest. “How was I supposed to know it was you? You let me think it was someone else, and now you’re telling me it was you all along?”
“Jiwon, I—” He stepped forward, trying to explain himself, but she took another step back.
“No,” she said sharply. “You should have told me from the start. I trusted you, Jungwon. And now I feel stupid for getting attached to someone who didn’t even have the guts to tell me the truth. You played me.”
Jungwon’s stomach twisted. The hurt in her voice hit him like a punch to the gut.
“That’s not how it was,” he said quickly, his voice breaking slightly. “I wasn’t trying to play you. I just didn’t want to make things weird, and I—”
“You did make it weird,” she shot back, her eyes shining with frustration. “You’ve been acting like everything was normal while keeping this huge secret from me! How do you think that makes me feel? It feels like you never trusted me enough to be honest.”
The words hit him like a brick wall. He hadn’t even realized how much he’d hurt her by keeping the secret. To him, it was always about protecting her feelings, but now he saw how wrong he had been.
He reached out, his voice softer. “Jiwon, I’m sorry. I should have told you the truth sooner. I didn’t want to risk ruining what we had. But it wasn’t fair to you, I know that now.”
Jiwon shook her head, taking a step back again. “I don’t know, Jungwon… I don’t think I can just forget about this. You should have been honest with me. You should have trusted me.”
There was a long pause, and for a moment, the only sound between them was the distant chatter of her friends, fading away. Jungwon could feel the distance between them growing, something he hadn’t felt before.
She sighed, running a hand through her hair. “I need some time to think.”
He wanted to say something, but no words came. He just stood there, watching as Jiwon turned and walked back toward her friends, her posture stiff, her movements slower than usual.
-
Jungwon stared at his phone, the screen lit up with the messages he had sent her earlier that day. He had wanted to fix things. He had hoped that after revealing the truth, everything would fall into place. But now, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had just made things worse.
Jiwon:
You lied to me, Jungwon. You kept a secret, and I don’t know how I feel about it anymore. I thought you were different, but I guess I was wrong. The message stung. He reread it over and over, the words blurring as he tried to make sense of them. He had wanted to tell her, but now… he wasn’t sure it mattered. It felt like he had lost her.
