Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Lestrade arrived at the scene of a crime to find a dead man lying at the base of a four-storey building. Lestrade focused his attention on the body, saying that the man had jumped to his death. Holmes decided to enter the building. He walked to each of the windows facing the dead man, opened them and tossed something out. When he returned to Lestrade below, he pronounced that the man had been murdered.
Why was Holmes correct?

Answer to previous riddle: If the stranger had really believed the room to be his, he wouldn't have knocked. He was checking to see whether there was anyone present.
