Chapter 13

After a couple of days of patrolling, Hawks finally decided it was time to do some training. I was excited to learn new things from Hawks what I really want to learn is how to move just as fast as him. Hawks and I were sitting on top of skyscraper looking down on the city. "Do you know what is most important part of protecting a city?" I was confused for a moment not understanding where he was getting at. "Its to protect the people right?" I asked him. "Yeah thats important too but if you really want to be a good hero it's best if you learn how to multitask." I guess I understand where Hawks is coming from but how do I multitask. "I can tell you're confused." Hawks chuckled a bit. "Here let me explain, say if you have an injured civilian but there's a villain right infront of you ready to attack. You'll need to get the civilian to safety while also fighting off the villain." Now I get it. If i don't get the civilian out of the way they can get injured but if I don't fight off the villain we'll both be in danger. "That's what we'll be doing today. As you know I can control individual feathers this helps me protect and fight. So far I've only seen you use your quirk for fighting. Think of ways you can use your quirk to save too. I'll come check on you later." Before I could even get a word out, Hawks was gone in a blink of an eye. "Some mentor you are!" I screamed out. "Jeez I can't believe he left me alone like that He could've atleast tell me what to do." I sat down on the floor and crossed my arms in frustration. A few minutes of thinking I had nothing. Sighing I laid down and looked at the sky. The bright blue sky was spotted with fluffy white clouds. In the sky was a pair of bird flying by. As I watched them I began to reflect my days with Hawks. That's when something clicked. I sat up excitedly that I might have figured it out. Everytime we fought a criminal Hawks used his feathers to drag bystanders out of the way without even looking. What if I did the same thing? I held out my hand and closed my eyes to concentrate on the shape I want. Just a simple clone. If I can clone myself I can use it to help me fight and protect others. The first few times came out really sloppy. It made me cringe just looking at it. I wanted to give up. This was harder than it looked. It's easier to create things like wings and weapons but creating a person that can move was a different story. Suddenly an idea came to mind. I pulled out my phone to watch videos of Ectoplasm. Scrolling through YouTube, I found a video where Ectoplasm explained how he is able to make so many clones effortlessly. "I must admit it did take me awhile to get the hang of it but I learned to not think of my clones as just copies of myself but as a part of me leaving my body." I paused the video and thought about what Ectoplasm said. I decided to give it another try and this time I thought of my clone more than a copy. As I closed my eyes I could feel my quirk shifting the shadows around my body. Upon opening my eyes I saw a black figure of myself staring back at me. I jumped up in excitement that I was actually able to do it by myself. "Well looks like someone has been practicing." Hawks flew back down to where I was standing and looked ahead to my clone. "That's not bad kid. Now try making it move." I almost completely forgot about that part. I looked over at the shadow. Focusing my mind on just a finger the shadow began to twitch. I tried moving the arm and it began to move up and down. After awhile of moving each individual limb the next step was getting my shadow clone to walk. It took almost my entire concentration but I was finally able to make my clone walk. Soon enought after a few hours of practice I was able to have my clone run around the rooftop almost effortlessly. "Great job kid, I would've made feathers but i think this will work better." I called back my shadow clone and sat on the floor. I felt exhausted from using my quirk for so long. This is a great start. Maybe one day I'll be able to make more than one clone. Just then my phone started ringing so I picked it up "Hello?" "Hey (y/n)!!! It's been awhile since we talked. I've been so busy with the internship that I didn't get the chance." I was glad to hear Eijiro's voice. We've both been so busy with our training that we haven't talked to each other. "Hey Eijiro, I just learned a new move but it's a surprise." "That's great peeble! I can't wait to see it but I have to go before Fourth Kind hits the back of my head again." I could hear Eijiro sigh through the phone and I just chuckled. "Ok, call me later?" "Of course!" We both hung up and I could see Hawks standing on the ledge with a look of concern on his face. The sun was down by now and the stars was shining. I looked in the direction where Hawks was staring and saw a strange orange light. "Hey Hawks what's that?" Hawks opened up his wings and began to lift himself into the air. "Come on kid, there's a fire we have act fast." Without a second glance Hawks took off to the building. I created my shadow wings and began to follow behind. Hawks was faster than me so he got there first. When I got there the scene was chaos citizens were trying to run out of the building while hawks was trying to use his feathers to stop the debris from falling everywhere. The firefighters weren't hear yet but the cops we're trying to evacuate everyone. I didn't know what to do. I've never been in a situation like this before. "Please officer you have to go save my kids! They're still trapped in the building! A frantic yelled to a cop behind me. Kids are in the building!" In that moment my body moved on it's own. I ran into the building ignoring the call from Hawks. There was smoke and flames every where. I felt like the middle of summer inside the building. "Hello! Is there anyone here?!" I yelled out trying to get some kind of answer. I began to panic when I didn't hear anyone, thinking I was too late, that's when I heard small faint voices coming from the floor above me. "Help!" I heard again. Without a second to lose I raced up the stairs and followed the voices. When I got there I found two little boy and girl holding on to each other crying in fear. They were trapped in a hallway with flaming debris blocking the pathway. "It's ok kids I'm going to get you guys out." I looked over to the older brother who nodded his head. "Whats your names?" The little boy looked at me and wiped his nose. "My name is Kai and this is my little sister Aiko." I gave them both a smile to calm down their nerves. "Ok Kai and Aiko my name is Ratri and I'm going to get you guys out ok. Your mom is outside waiting for you two." Both of them looked at me and nod their heads. Using what little shadows I had I used my shadow vines to wrap around them and lift them over the debris. When I sat the two down they both ran over to me crying and holding my legs. I smiled too myself but that moment was short lived. I heard the building begin to creek which was a sign that it was going to collapse. "Come on we have to go!" I squat down to let the two climb on my back and used my shadow vines to secure them in place. We made it down the stairs when I saw debris about to fall ontop of us i dropped the kid down and used my shadow to create a barrier above us. The debris was really heavy and it was taking all my strength to hold it up. I looked down at Kai and Aiko. They both had scared looks on their face. As a hero I need to make everyone feel safe so I couldn't show them any fear. I gave them a smile too let them know everything will be alright. "Listen up guys, it's really dangerous here so I'm going to use my shadow clone to get you guys out. When you guys get out their tell Hawks what's going on." I had to use some of the shadow from the barrier to create my clone. I instructed my clone to take the kids out of the building and too their mother. "We can't just leave you here!" Kai began to protest. "I'm going to be ok. Besides I'm a hero." Kai's eyes widen but he nodded and got him and Aiko on the clown and then took off. When they were out of sight more debris fell onto the barrier. The weight caused me to drop a knee. "Please Hawks hurry, I don't know how much longer I can last.
