Maha Ashtami or durgashtmi, is celebrated in the third day of durga pooja or the eight day of navratri. The word maha means grand and ashtami means eight.
The belief is, on this day goddess Kali emerged from the forehead of Goddess Durga and killed Chanda, Munda and Rakthabija. It uttar thus celebrated as victory of Maa over evils.
As the goddess Kali was emerged from Durga, the 8 Ashtanayikas emerged from Kali on ashtami. The Ashtanayikas are - Brahmani, Maheswari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasinghi, Indrani and Chamunda - together they all are also worshipped on Ashtami.
This day is also known as Astra Puja and Or Virashtami as tradition is to worship weapons or astra. The story behind goes like, as Maa durga was getting prepared for the war with Mahishaasur, all God gave their powers and weapons to her. The weapons were worshipped and handed over to Maa Durga ok this day,Ashtami. It is known as Virashtami to celebrate the valour of Maa Durga.
Sandhi Puja is one of the most important time during Durga puja. It is the juncture of ashtami and navami tithi during this time a hom Or yagya is usually performed. At this point a balidan or sacrifice is offered to Ma Durga.
In many parts of India, families celebrate kanjak Or Kanya poojan where nine little girls are worshipped as they are believed as 9 forms to Durga.
