~1 week later~

The girl sits in the library

next to Kylie

They are working on their business

Kylie has a laptop in front of her

but as she is talking

she gets distracted

(which happens a lot)

There are two girls putting up a banner

for the school dance

the dance is in 2 weeks now

Plenty of time, according to Kylie

"Plenty of time for what?" The girl asks.

"Getting Spot to ask you to the dance." Kylie replies promptly. She has set herself as wingwoman, and nothing will budge her from it.

"It's not gonna happen." The girl says. "We're friends."

"For now." Kylie says ominously, which makes the girl laugh. They both start laughing, before the librarian tells them to quiet down.

***************************************************************

He hears her laughter

a couple tables over

wants to know the cause of it

wants to be the cause of it

"Focus." His friend demands

but he can't.

Not with the dance so near. He'd rather be practicing

Practicing

is a big part of the plan.

And as it is a surprise plan

the girl cannot know of it

When school lets out, the boy begins to leave. Then he hesitates. There is no practice today, but he usually walks home with the girl. He wants to walk home with her. But he needs to practice. So he sticks some paper in her locker. Apologizing. And he leaves.

***************************************************************

The note

flutters to the ground

when the girl opens her locker

Kylie's excited gasp

turns into shock as the girl reads it

"Told you." the girl says

but even she is confused. Even though she thought-

no, knew-

that the boy had no romantic feelings

she thought they were friends

but apparently not good enough friends

to give a full explanation

"Wait. There's another." Kylie says. Pointing to a piece of paper on the ground. The girl picks it up. Unfolds it. On it it says, "need a ride to the dance?"

It's not an invitation. But it's better than nothing.
