' What a wicked game you play,
to make me feel this way. '
-Chris Isaak, "Wicked Game"
~I am going to explain everything. She tells me calmly, but that drives my mind further into madness.
"What the hell. Is this some type of sick game? You play gone girl while I go putting my life in danger for you? What an exceptional big sister, always playing the protective card but secretly being the one throwing me to the wolves. How does it feel?"
The men look like they may interfere but decide against it. My sister crotches down on the ground next to my chair trying desperately to calm my nerves.
"Theo, I'm keeping you safe, isn't that what I've always done?"
"You may not see it now but I had to do what I did in order to keep us both protected. I watched over you, I kept tabs on where you were and how you were."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better? And what exactly did those spies see, my down spiraling, the trial of bodies I leave wherever I go? You want to know how I am sister I'll tell you how I turned out much worse than you could've ever imagined."
My voice is venomous. I only feel bitterness for the one I once loved. The only one I have ever loved.
"Listen to me, there's so much you don't know. So many things that you have overlooked."
"No, you hear me. I told you once I wasn't interested in your do good agency, and I sure as hell am not interested now."
Her eyes are watery as she stands up from her spot next to me. She holds her hands behind her back giving a nod to Steve.
He comes over and gives me his hand, "Come on, let's take a walk."
I push his arm away standing on my own.
"I'm not a child Captain, I'd appreciate if you didn't treat me like one."
He nods looking sympathetically at my sister before turning back to me, "understood ma'am."
He follows me out of the room letting me storm to whichever direction my legs take me. I'm furious. I have been living in the streets while Lou has been living in luxury. I haven't had anyone to watch my back, but she has the Avengers on her side. This entire time I believed I was killing the men that killed her, but in reality I have been doing it for myself. I really am a killer.
I stand at a glass balcony staring out the window in front of it.
"You don't have to follow me," I tell Steve feeling him staying a close distance behind.
"No, but I should."
I sigh loudly running my hand through my tangled hair. It's long now, down past my chest. But I didn't have time to groom myself while on the run.
"So if you guys were keeping tabs on me, why take me now? What use am I to you?"
Captain comes up beside me putting his hands on the railing. His face and hands are unflawed, not even a sliver of struggle shown on them. I wonder what Bucky would think if he saw him now. I wonder if he would be envious of what his friend has become. I shake the thoughts from my head. There is no Bucky, not in my world at least.
"Like Louise said, there's a lot you don't know. She will explain everything to you when you're ready."
I want to roll my eyes at him but I know it's not the mature thing to do. So I settle with a glare.
"We need your help Theo."
I laugh in his face, "you want a murderer on your side Captain? Are you sure that's a path you want to go down?"
He frowns at the use of the word, but he hardly knows how it applies to me.
"In our eyes you're skilled at self defense, your aim is superior, you have an ability to get into the mind, and you happen to know exactly where to find people."
I look up at him turning my head to the side, "and who exactly are you looking for Rogers?"
"You know exactly who I'm looking for."
We are playing a dangerous game. A game I know I will win.
"Hmph, you may have to be more specific than that. I have threatened a lot of men this year."
He looks amused as if he already knew I would cause him trouble.
"James Buchanan Barnes, I believe you may have met him somewhere."
The name settles in the air and it makes my chest feel heavy. My smile turns into a frown instantly. I point a finger at his chest, "I don't give information for free. If I met Winter don't you think he'd already be dead by now?"
He keeps that pretty smile on his face. It irks me.
"I don't know ma'am, you seem to be a bit defensive about it."
I groan turning away from him, "don't cross me Rogers, I'm not a girl you want to get caught in cross-fire with."
I turn around again on my way out, "As for your friend, I have no idea where a ghost like him may hide."
