At age 21, Marcus was on the job when he started experiencing various symptoms such as: shortness of breath, blurred vision, fatigue and nausea. He discovered that he has kidney failure with his kidneys functioning below 20% of their capacity. Facing a life or death situation, Marcus only had two options: get a kidney transplant or be on dialysis. Life was at a crossroad for him to decide to live or die. The confusion and denial he had to face, often questioned: Why me? In "Hope Is Where The Heart Is: My Battle Against End Stage Renal Disease", Marcus writes about his life preparing to be on peritoneal dialysis as well as struggling to cope with his new lifestyle. He explains the highs and lows of dealing with dialysis complications, medications, and the constant pressure to give up.
