What if the Brain already realized at some point that all of his attempts to take over the world probably won't succeed? I don't mean from some "vision of the future" like in This Old Mouse, what I mean is more that he's become somewhat self-aware. Whether you believe he's the "genius" or the one who's "insane", Brain is undeniably a smart guy, fully able to recognize patterns. What if it occurred to him at some point that no matter what approach he takes, he's doomed to always be back with Pinky in the Acme Labs cage at the end of the night? What if he keeps trying every night, not because he actually believes it will work, but because he's been trying for so long that if he suddenly stopped he would have no idea what else to do? Brain's spent most of his life throwing the whole of his energy into conquering the world. Every single day during the day he thinks about it, every single night (with only a few exceptions) he acts on his plans. Like older people who are workaholics for decades, and then when they retire they're at a loss. What if he feels like he has no choice but to continue, even if he already knows he's doomed to fail?
