You walked a couple steps behind Mush as you reached the blond boy. The boy nodded once to Mush, scanning you up and down. (Almost wrote eyes scanning you up and down- oops-) "Who's this then?"
"Y/N." Mush replied briefly.
"She the new one?" Blink asked with a slow nod.
"Yeah." Mush nodded back. "They's stayin' with us while the house is bein' fixed."
"Lucky." Blink said with a slight wink in your direction.
You raised your eyebrows slightly, about to speak, before Mush interrupted. "Yeah, I am." You blinked. What did he mean by that? You couldn't see his face, given as you were behind him, and as you started forwards to see, he turned to face the woods.
"C'mon, we wanna hurry before it gets dark." Mush said, shooting a smile over his shoulder that seemed to be directed at you.
"Yeah yeah lover boy, let's go." Blink said, starting towards the tree line. Mush rolled his eyes and followed after him. You trailed a little behind the two, and Mush dropped back slightly to walk with you, which caused Blink to as well. You were now flanked by the two boys.
"So. Y/N. Ever been out west before?" Blink asked, looking at you out of the corner of his eye.
"No." You shook your head. "This is my first time."
Blink nodded slowly. "Right. City girl, then?"
You nodded a reply, and Blink smirked a little. "Gotcha. So I'se assumin' that means it's up t' us to show you all the ins and outs of country life."
You shrugged slightly. "I think I'm doin' a pretty good job, considering I've been here for a couple hours."
"Watch out! There's poison ivy!" Blink said suddenly, throwing an arm in front of you, stopping you from stepping down.
You glanced down a little nervously, only to see bare ground.
Mush rolled his eyes. "Lesson one, don' listen t' anything Blink says."
"Lesson two, poison ivy looks like that." Blink said, pointing at a plant near Mush's foot.
You studied the plant for a little, nodding. "Alright."
"Lesson three, if you want to pick berries, you should do so before nightfall." Mush reached around you, his arm barely ghosting your shoulder and shoving Blink gently. "So we should keep moving."
Blink shrugged. "Jus' helpin' her out."
"Yeah, okay. We got a lotta time ta do it though." Mush shot you another charming grin and you nearly melted on the spot. Yep. You had it bad.
"Suuuuuuuure." Blink drawled. "Keep movin', you said?"
Mush nodded and the three of you kept walking. Soon you reached a small area near a brook, with leafy green plants spreading wide across the dirt. The leaves were dotted with small, red, ripe berries.
"Pick as many o' the red ones as ya like, but leave the green ones. That ways we can come back later." Mush advised you, picking a sample one from the ground. "See? This one's just about perfect." He said, offering it to you.
You took the berry, inspecting it. It was smaller than the tame ones you had had before, but looked pretty much the same. It smelled absolutely divine.
"Try it." Mush prompted, looking at you happily. You brought the strawberry to your mouth, taking a small bite. It was very good.
Mush was looking at you, seeming to zone out slightly, before he got hit in the head with a berry.
"C'mon, man!" Mush wiped the juice from the splattered berry off his face.
"More pickin', less googly eyes." Blink instructed, picking a few more berries and eating one.
"How bout less eatin, more pickin'?" Mush suggested with a mumble, bending over and picking more.
You did the same, careful not to crush the berries and plants as you crouched down to pick. Eating a few as you went.
The time near the creek passed somehow quickly and slowly at the same time. Soon however the light grew dimmer, and it was time for each of you to leave. You and Mush parted with Blink at the grove of trees where you had picked him up before walking back to the house in companiable silence, both of your mouths colored slightly red from the juice.
When you reached the porch, you stood looking at each other for a long moment.
"Thanks for bringin' me with." You said softly.
"Yeah. O' course." Mush nodded, glancing at you carefully. His tongue peeked out, ensuring all the strawberry juice was gone from his lips. You suddenly became aware of how close he was to you, and how there was nobody else around. You could smell the strawberries on his breath. Your lips parted slightly, looking up at him, his face silhouetted perfectly by the moonlight that was beginning to illuminate the fields around you.
"Uh, Y/N-" Mush began, before the porch door opened.
"Mushy!" Eliza said, bolting out and hugging him tight around the legs. "You gonna tell me a story before bed?"
"Oh. Yeah." He said with a small half smile. "O' course."
He began to go inside with the small girl, looking back at you, another smile lighting his face.
"See you tomorrow."
