Eventually the bruises became too dark too plentiful to cover. So she made excuses. "I fell down the stairs," She said when he broke her wrist. They didn't have stairs in their slab house. "I ran into a door," She said when he blacked her eye. "I'm just clumsy," She insisted when he broke her ribs. She followed each statement up with a smile and light chuckle. Everyone believed her. Nobody could see the light fade from her eyes.
