Chapter 4: Found

“I can read other people’s thoughts, including what you’re thinking right now, doctor.”

I raised my eyebrows.

“Is that so?” I said.

Thana smiled as if he really was reading my mind.

“Now, the doctor is thinking about how handsome I look, too handsome to be in the psych ward, right?”

I almost laughed. Of course, that would have made the patient feel bad, so I couldn’t laugh. I smiled and nodded instead. “I think you’re right… and how do you know what I’m thinking, P’Thana?”

P’Thana nodded with his success. “It was your voice that said it, doctor.”

I wrote this important information down on a paper, so I could add it to the report later.

“Besides other people’s thoughts, have you heard anything else?”

“I hear many voices, voices from my father, mother, sister, friends, neighbors…” The young man leaned against the back of his chair and closed his eyes. “Is it because of the medication? I do not know, but before the meds I could hear a lot more. I could hear different people’s thoughts at once. If I am with someone alone, like I am with you right now, doctor, then I can only hear that person’s thoughts. But if there are other people, I will certainly hear many voices at the same time.”

I nodded. “What do the voices say to you?”

“Well, sometimes they scold me. Excuse my cursing, doctor, but they say things like ‘you’re bad, Thana. You’re very terrible. You are evil’” Thana said with a calm expression, like he was being indifferent. “Sometimes there are orders like ‘do this or do not do that.’ Things like that… It’s a lot.”

“Do you think it is unusual to hear this?”

“...no” Thana shook his head. “This is a gift that God has given me. I can sense telepathy floating in the air while others cannot hear it. It’s as if I have been given a receiving antenna. It’s strange, right?”

He leaned closer and whispered, “Many people can hear them. They are the same as me, but they believe it was a disease. They tried to make me believe it was a disease, too, but I’m not crazy. Everyone thinks I am, but I’m not.”

I smiled at that response, wrote down how he didn’t believe he was sick on my paper.

“Yes, P’Thana is not crazy. There is evidence that confirms what you have is a simple brain disease, like any other disease.”

“Do you believe that, doctor?” Thana asked.

“It is not a comment. What I said is what is written in the books… Now, what is the future of P’Thana?”

He was silent for a while. He rolled his eyes up to look at the ceiling as if he saw something for a moment, and then his eyes turned back to me.

The patient leaned very close to me with his face almost hitting mine, and I immediately leaned back.

“In the future, if I leave the hospital… I will go find you, doctor. You are the person I have talked with the longest. I told you all of my secrets. I want to talk to you again because you accepted me for who I am. You are the only one who did… the only one…”

————————

Now, he was standing in front of me. Thanasuwanrak found me.

He was a muscular-bodied young man, at least 185cm in height, wearing a black shirt and straight jeans. Right now, he was leaning against the doorframe in front of my dorm room.

His hands were in his pockets in a comfortable manner. Meanwhile, I just returned from Bee’s dorm in a fiery mood that made me forget about the events of the past, momentarily.

“Hello doctor, we finally meet again.” He said, smiling coldly. He was looking at me with completely black, shineless eyes.

I felt like my blood was freezing. I wanted to run away, but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t even make a sound. I felt my heart racing in my chest. I was sweating.

“Tha… na,” my voice emanated softly through my dry throat.

“How are you doing? How are you?” Thana stepped away from the door and walked toward me. I took a step back, but stopped like I was frozen. “Why are you acting like this? I’m Thana, the patient that you talked to. Don’t you remember, doctor?”

“How did you get here? How did you find me?” I asked in a shaky voice caused by my panic.

“Well, I already told you when you asked what I wanted to do in the future. I did as I said.” Thana stopped walking and stretched his arms out to his sides. “I just wanted to thank you for talking to me back then. I feel great and am much better now. I still have to take neurotic medication though. I haven’t heard other people’s thoughts for a while, doctor.”

He didn’t answer the question that I asked.

“How… how did you find me?” I asked again, taking another step back. I put my right hand in the pocket of my pants to get out my phone and call the police.

Thana laughed as if he was amused by my question or amused that I hadn’t been able to keep up. “Finding a person these days is not difficult.”

That’s enough!! I gathered my strength and took another step back to turn around and run away. I decided to run down the stairs instead of using the elevator.

“Oh, Doctor Ton!” Aunt Noi, the housekeeper of the building, said. I stopped, took Aunt Noi by the shoulders, and she looked at me in a shocked expression.

“Aunt Noi, someone is after me. He is a dangerous person. Help me!” I said quickly.

“Uh what? Don’t worry doctor, I’ll call the security guard.”

“Thank you, thank you… but I can’t stay here tonight. I’ll go sleep somewhere else. Please call the security guard and notify the police.”

After leaving Aunt Noi, I ran to the parking lot, got in my car quickly and drove away.

While on the road, I felt my heartbeat slow down. The hand holding the steering wheel was drenched in sweat and kept slipping.

Tonight, I have experienced two terrible situations. First was Bee’s and now P’Thana’s.

I frowned. I felt all the muscles in my face become tense until I started feeling pain. I felt my head break into a thousand pieces. I can’t seem to concentrate on the road anymore. I didn’t even see the brake light of the car ahead of me turn on.

When I finally came to my senses, I tried to slide my foot to the brake pedal, but it was too late.
