A lil summary:
After travelling for a while Karl had figured out that Dream was always there, be it past present or future. Dream also figured this out through the amount of times he's seen the short brown haired male through out his immortal life. They ended up getting close after Karl decided to approach Dream. Of course Dream doesn't remember everything but he still has very vague memories of Karl (present time) and knows that he cares about Karl. What Dream doesn't realise is the amount of times Karl has seen him 'die', Karl and Dream have a very special relationship that neither of them really fully understand but both know they deeply care about each other.
