Bucky had now been gone for a few months now and every two weeks a new letter arrived. Bucky wrote about his friends in New York and how he missed dancing with her, even though they only went dancing once. He also told her more about his best friend Steve and from everything he told her Annabelle felt as if she knew him herself, even though she obviously didn't. She knew he was worried about his friend, they'd known each other ever since they were little and Bucky had always been like his body guard. Though a Steve Rogers never did pop up in hospital so she was sure to always mention that she had yet to meet the man he spoke so fondly of.

Bucky always asked Anna many questions about herself, wanting to know everything he possibly could about the girl he was starting to fall for. How could he not be curious about her? It was also a nice distraction from the war he was currently in and he loved to find out more about her. Annabelle wrote back and made sure she answered every single question on his letter. She told him about why she wanted to become a nurse and how she was able to become one so young. Bucky also knew some of the gossip at the hospital because Anna told him everything. As he had asked Annabelle never spared a detail.

Annabelle would also ask Bucky many questions about himself, he too made sure he answered them all. She told Bucky what was going on at home, whether it was good or bad. She gave him every detail about the things that were happening in New York since he didn't get to read the newspaper so he had no idea what was going on in his hometown. She always had something to write about and her letters were usually three sides long. Annabelle also told him that she also missed dancing. How could she not? After all, the only guy who had ever taken her dancing had left for the war. Even though he had only been gone for a few months she ached to see him again and the excitement she felt when she got his letters was the most excited she had ever been.

Annabelle noticed that despite being in the middle of a war Bucky's letters always seemed upbeat and joyous. Though he always did write something that gave away the truth about what he was feeling, it was usually just a sentence and if she didn't pay as much attention as she did she probably never would have noticed it. Though she always made sure to comment on it so he knew she knew how he felt. It must have been so hard for him to leave behind his friends and family to fight a war that wasn't even his. Yes it may have been his countries but it wasn't between him and hitler, it just didn't seem fair. Then again, nothing was fair. For example in one letter he mentioned that he was always damp, that he was starting to forget what it felt like to be dry and clean. She guessed they didn't get to change or bathe very often. She felt bad because her life was the same as usual, her hours were just a little longer. Then there were people like Bucky who were in the war fighting for their lives just because some ass wants to have more power. She knew her job was just as important but he was working so much harder than she was, he was literally putting his life on the line yet she was saving them.

Annabelle could always tell when the fighting got intense because the letters would arrive slightly late and they were shorter than usual, with less said about himself. Instead they were usually filled with questions about her; about her interests, likes, dislikes, what she wanted out of life. Even things as simple as her favourite colour or band. Although there were usually many she would always answer every one and even try and ask a few questions herself and was surprised when he answered them. He didn't always answer all of his questions but she didn't blame him, he must be very busy and very tired.

Annabelle's mother did help her with the letters and Annabelle couldn't have been more grateful. Without her mother helping her it would have been a lot harder for them to stay in touch. Although Marie did sometimes tease Annabelle about writing love letters to a man she barely knew but she was careful about it and never mentioned it around Phillip. Though Annabelle always told her they weren't love letters, they were companionship. Overall Annabelle's mother was extremely happy that her daughter was happy. Obviously that's not what Annabelle thought but she didn't want her mother to know everything. Marie knew that Annabelle was lying when she said they weren't love letters, who else would write to a soldier in war as much as they did if they weren't love letters? Nobody. Some families didn't even write to each other as much as those two did. She was ultimately happy for Annabelle and she prayed every night that her daughters soldier would make it home safe, for her daughter sake. She knew Annabelle would be absolutely heart broken if her soldier had passed. Yes, Marie had started to address the sergeant as her daughters soldier because they were basically lovers now.
