Annabelle threw herself into her work. Not hearing from Bucky really affected her and she checked in with his family every two weeks to see if they heard anything. They heard nothing. She thought of maybe writing again incase he didn't get her letter but Bucky's mother said she was going to do that and there was no point in them both doing it. It had been a month and two months without a response from Bucky. She was worried and if anything she just wanted to know whether he was alive. She didn't know what she would do if he wasn't, his letters were the highlight of her month, she didn't have anything to look forward to if she was getting no letters. She was a lot more down than she used to be but she never let it affect her work. Around all the injured soldiers she put up a happy front, to help try and raise the spirits of the soldiers. The soldiers didn't need a depressed nurse looking after them, it would do them absolutely no good at all.
She picked up even more hours at the hospital and now worked on the weekends as well as weekdays. Anything to keep her mind off of Bucky, the soldier she'd barely gotten to know, the soldier she was starting to fall for. Annabelle was comforting to all the soldiers and they all favoured her and loved it when she was the one to check them over. Not just because she was a beauty, but because she was a kind, genuine person who tried her hardest to make her patients comfortable and start a conversation of interest to them. It also helped that she was a very good nurse, one of the best in the tents if not the very best. Her impressive work drew attention and although she didn't know it, she was being watched. She was tending to a patient having a lighthearted conversation about his family when she was interrupted.
"Your wife is a very lucky woman and I'm sure you'll be reunited with her and your baby very soon." Annabelle
"I hope so, nurse Scott." Soldier
"Oh, please, call me Anna." Annabelle
"Anna. So, do you have someone special in your life?" Soldier
This wasn't the first time this question came up and she certainly doubted that it would be the last. The soldiers tended to ask her about her personal life and she didn't mind answering but this question is the one she didn't particularly like. She didn't like it because she then had to remember the one night they spent together and the fact that he broke his promise, his promise to stay safe.
"I had someone, a soldier. He went to war a year ago, I haven't heard from him in two months." Annabelle
"I'm sorry." Soldier
"Don't be." Annabelle
Annabelle always did hate it when the soldiers had that look of pity when she told them. She hated pity, it made her feel weak and she hated feeling weak. Most of all she hated why they were pitying her because she knew that they believe that her soldier is dead and she still wasn't ready to admit that to herself.
"Do you know what happened?" Soldier
"No, I have no idea." Annabelle
The soldiers solemn face told her all she needed to know, her soldier must have been dead. She didn't know when she made the change from a soldier to her soldier but now it was common for her to call him her soldier. Because he wasn't just a soldier, he was hers and she wanted nothing more than to be his.
"Excuse me. Nurse Scott?"
Annabelle doesn't turn around and face the woman talking to her just yet as she was still patching up the soldier but she didn't want to be rude so she replied to the woman and hoped she would understand why she couldn't face her.
"Yes, how can I help you?" Annabelle
"Can we have a word?"
The woman understood why the nurse didn't face her, she was busy with a patient at the moment and he was her number one priority. That's what they needed, a nurse like her who puts her patients first.
