Ash "Puppy" Gilbert is the young brother in Elena and older brother of Jeremy Gilbert he's the same age of elena just younger by a few months.
At a young age he was given the nickname "puppy" as he has a love for animals, he and Damon Salvatore grew very close when they first met. After the tomb vampires he was found out to not be human but a hybrid .
He was turned into a vampire by Damon when he was about to die but he is also a which and a werewolf. Making him the first ever tribrid. No one but Damon , Katharina , Jeremy, Bonnie and rick know this tho as they are the only ones he really trysts with it.
