Boom

My demons of the past year demand entrance

At my doorstep, hear them whine, half with fear

Boom, boom, boom

Getting closer, more desperate—

I will not let in the shadows of yesteryear.

Away from the noise, from the drinks outside

Inside I, the ever coward, hide

Boom

Elsewhere they sing the last chorus of Auld Lang Syne

Elsewhere they set illegal firecrackers alight

Elsewhere—

I cannot join them in this raucous midnight

For I have failed them in yesteryear

Outside, once again my demons jeer

Boom boom boom

The last firework outside dies

The demons flee, fearing their demise

It's safe now, and I am sent reeling

As they shout the new year's greeting

My demons, they have no more power

At least for a year and a hour...
