Y/N POV
You awoke to the sounds of footsteps in the room. You looked up to see the main doctor on Dom's case, Dr. Shepherd. He had a group of much younger doctors standing behind him, some taking notes, some watching his every move in awe. They must have been new residents or med students or something. He looked down at his clipboard frowning, and then sighed heavily. He turned around and whispered something to the group of students, and they soon left the room, leaving him, I, and Dom alone. He put down his clipboard and grabbed a chair. He set the chair down in front of me and took a seat. He rested his chin on his hands and sighed once again. His body language is telling you that whatever he's going to say, will not be good news. He began, "Is anyone else coming today Y/N?"
"Uh yea, the boys should be back in about an hour, and Dom's family will be back again tonight, why?" you responded.
"I have some unfortunate news regarding Dominic's condition, and I want to make sure someone will be here with you so you're not alone. I can tell you now and you can tell his friends and family, or I can tell you all together, it's completely up to you. What would you like to do?" He spoke again.
"If it's bad news, please tell me now. I can handle it. I want to be the one to tell his family though, that way I can process it first and try to think of a way to tell them without it hurting so much," you said.
"Okay. Well, we ran some tests, and unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Dominic is going to wake up. The lack of oxygen did more damage to his brain than we thought. It is highly unlikely he will wake up. Dominic is brain dead," Dr. Shepherd explained.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is brain dead.
Dominic is b r a i n d e a d.
That last sentence repeated in your mind over and over again. It felt like someone was nailing it into your brain with a hammer, just trying to get it to stick, to sink in, to make sense. But it doesn't. You just saw him. He was just in your arms. He's laying in that bed right in front of you. How could he be brain dead? How is this possible? How-
You were pulled out of your thoughts when Dr. Shepherd began speaking again.
"You sorta zoned out there a bit so I'm not sure if you heard what I said. 72 hours. Due to quickly deteriorating condition, we only have about 72 hours if you do decide to go on with organ donation. Because he doesn't have a US drivers license, he hasn't signed up for organ donation himself. (a/n *disclaimer* I don't actually know anything about organ donation policies of non-US citizens inside the US, but this is a work of fiction, so all small details like this are just for the sake of the story, and are fiction.) His next of kin will have to make that decision for him, so we'll talk to his family about it sometime in the next 72 hours. It is obviously a choice, and you also can choose to keep him on life supportive care for as long as you please, but we can only donate his organs if you make the decision in the next 72 hours. Again, I'll be in to talk to his family more about this since they are the ones that have to make the decision, but I thought I'd also tell you now," he continued.
You froze. This doesn't feel real. The dream you had when you were inside his arms felt more real than this. This is the last thing you expected to happen.
"I'm so sorry Y/N. Losing someone you love really is one of the hardest things a person can go through. If you need anyone to talk to we have many therapeutic options inside the hospital. If you have any questions regarding his condition feel free to ask me or any of his other doctors or nurses. I'll be back in later. Again, I am so so sorry," he said.
You watched as Dr. Shepherd put the chair back next to Dom's bed and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. You broke down into silent sobs as you couldn't contain it anymore. Dom was everything to you. You're person. You're soulmate. You're best friend. You're lobster. And now it was all gone. You just wanted him to find you. You wanted him to come take you home...
a/n I'm back! I'm so sorry for the month hiatus. I was super busy recently but I promise I haven't forgotten about this story! I'm going to start adding my favorite songs as YouTube videos to each chapter that I also think would fit while reading the chapter. *I'm gonna go back and do it for the chapters before this one as well to make the story more enjoyable to read. :)
Let me know what you think about this one. More updates coming soon. Enjoy!
*I'll put a list of all of the songs used throughout the book in the description. :)
