I followed Jack to the little gym that was in the fire station, he was sitting on one of the exercise benches.
I saw the Tupperware of energy bars and reached my hand in to take one, but he saw me. "Hey!" "Can I have one?" He tilted his head and gave me a funny look.
"Hey! I wasn't making fun of you talking to Inara like Dean, Travis and Vic were...please?" He smiled and chuckles. "Go ahead kiddo". I excitedly reach in and took out a bar. I unwrapped it and took a bite; I don't how this is supposed to taste, but I can tell it is not good.
I wanted to spit it out, but I didn't want to do it in front of Jack and have him think I was insulting Inara. I make a 'I wanna throw up face'. "Got it down yet?" He asked. I shake my head still looking like I was gonna throw up.
He gives me a sympathetic look and hands me a tissue. I gladly take it and spit the contents into it. "I'm sorry, but that is not good" I said. He laughs "Hey, you tried it. I appreciate the attempt" he replies. "Please don't tell Inara what I did". "Don't worry Leila I won't". I gave him a sad smile.
"How's everything going kiddo?" "Um, things are ok, I guess. As ok as they can be in a pandemic. I miss going to school, seeing my friends, dance classes, and I miss Mamma". Jack looked shocked. "What?" "She moved out 3 weeks ago after the pandemic started because she was afraid of giving Mom and me COVID. I miss her."
"I bet. But Leila I'm sure your Mamma just wants to make sure you're safe. You know, with her working in a hospital she's around a lot of COVID patients". "I get that I just miss her so much!" I start sniffling but I quickly brush away the tears. "I'm sorry". "It's ok. I understand". He pats a space on the exercise bench next to him. I sit down and he puts an arm around me "Thanks Jack".
Jacks phone starts going off "It's Inara on FaceTime" "OOOOOOOoooooo" I said, I enjoy messing with Jack. "Oh no! Not you too". I giggle. I get up when Jack answers the phone. He talks to Inara for a second before my Mom walks in. "This room is for exercising. Maybe you should try it" she says to Jack. I giggle; Mom kisses me before heading to the spin machine.
Jack asks Inara what Marcus (her son) is up to; she says he's doing fractions. "Maybe you can teach me" Jack replies. Mom and I both giggle; I think it's cute that Jack is talking to Inara.
Jack ends his call "So those are Inara energy bars" Mom says. "Yeah. You, uh, like them?" he asks. "So good" she replies; I shiver and Jack sticks his tongue out at me "You're weird". "Well. I think I'm gonna walk around for a bit" I say walking out. "No leaving the station remember?" my Mom yells out. "I know Mom!" I yell back.
A little later
I went to the beanery and sat for a while; until I got bored and decided to go find people. The barn was the best option. I heard Vic arguing with Dean. I quickly doubled back; I knew I wanted no part of that conversation.
I decided to head back to my Mom's office to see if she was in there. Just then an alert went off saying there was a wild animal loose in the city. A wild animal?! I ran towards my Mom's office. "Mom?!" My Mom rushed out in her gear "Leila! Babe, I need you to stay here!" "What's going on?!" "There's a tiger loose in the city. We're heading out to warn everyone." "What? A tiger?" "Stay inside my office and lock the door".
Ok, I'm freaking out right now. If there is an actual tiger loose in the city, is it really safe for her to be going? "Mom, wait! Should you really be going? What happens if it attacks someone?"
My Mom whips around "I am the captain of this fire station Leila! I have to go warn everyone! It's my job!" Very rarely have I seen my Mom angry, but whenever she is, I know she's serious.
"Get inside, lock the door and hide. Do you understand me?" she asks sternly. I nod my head. I can feel my eyes filling with tears; I'm so scared right now.
Her face softens "I'll be back soon, ok?" I nod; I run to her and hug her. I feel my Mom's arms wrap tightly around me. We pull apart and she kisses my forehead. "I love you Mom." I said. "I love you too baby. Go!" I run into the office, close the door behind me, lock it and slump to the floor crying. I'm not going to lose both my Moms am I?
Later
I don't know how much time past, but I heard a couple of the trucks pull in and I hear people. I'm instantly relieved when I hear my Mom.
No POV
The teams got back to the station a little while later. Jack was updating the team on tiger sightings. "Hey guys. Looks like the tiger...crossed the bridge. There was a sighting in Adams and a mauling incident..."
"They can run up to 40 miles per hour. She could be anywhere. Just lock it all down just in case. Hey, someone check my office to see if Leila's in there!" Maya says.
"Captain, Leila's a good kid she doesn't disobey orders" Dean says trying to lighten the mood. "Well, Miller I'm a bit in 'Mom mode' now and I need to make sure my kid is safe" Maya replies with authority in her voice.
Jack heads to the door of Maya's office and knocks "Leila?!"
Leila POV
I heard someone knocking on the door and I got so scared. After a couple of moments, I recognized Jack's voice "Leila?!" "Jack?!" I stood up and unlocked the door.
The door whipped open; I saw my Mom "Mom!" I ran to her and she wrapped me in a tight hug; I feel her hand on my head. "Mom!" I cried. "shushing I'm here baby. It's ok" I feel her kiss my head. "Go back inside, ok?" I nod and head back.
My Mom and I are in her office and I'm trying to come down from all the anxiety of the day when we hear shouting. We get out to find out what's going on, THE TIGER IS IN THE BARN and Vic is face-to-face with it!
Jack and my Mom try to get Vic out of the barn safely and I am right behind them. "Lei..." Jack shushes my Mom; if we make any loud noises the tiger could attack. "Leila, get behind me! Do you hear me? Right behind me!" she whispers.

I nod and quickly rush behind her. I can feel her arm go across my body to shield me; I'm so scared for Vic right now. I flinch whenever I hear the tiger roar or growl. Dean distracts the tiger by throwing raw meat off the balcony and my Mom and Jack grab Vic.
After a few moments we all take in the sight of the tiger from the safety of the reception area. Jack FaceTimes Inara and Marcus and Ben FaceTimes Joey and Tuck. I have to admit, seeing a tiger in the fire station was amazing.
"Woah! She's beautiful isn't she Mom?" "She sure is sweet girl". "Can I crash on your bunk? I'm exhausted". "Sure" she puts her hand on my face "I'll get you up when it's time to leave ok?" "Ok". Mom kisses my head. I heard animal control arrive.
I went into Mom's bunk room, closed the door and closed my eyes as soon as I hit the bed.
