Seri was wearing her inner battles on her face; ferocious waves of guilt possessed her again and again as she fought the irony of the human heart.

His warmth was still lingering on her lips.

Stunned into silence by their actions, the governor's daughter and the former military captain could only stare at each other, chests heaving, minds scrambling for a possible reaction.

"I..." She made a valiant attempt at saying something, but whatever it was never made it past her lips.

"It's alright." This detached reply escaped him before he could stop it, as much as it pained him to say so.

There was actually nothing alright about the situation-- not the kiss they'd just shared, and most certainly not the way he was aching to hold her close again.

The light in Seri's eyes dulled upon hearing his words, embarrassment quickly setting in to cast shadows of indifference on her features.

"That was...unexpected." Seri quietly said, staring at nowhere in particular on the ground.

He nodded stoically, inwardly agreeing with her.

It was a massive understatement to say the least, Jeong Hyeok thought.

This woman practically embodied an intoxicating sort of unpredictability, one that led him to dream outside of the lines for a moment, to escape the agony he was shackled by.

For a moment, he had caught a glimpse of the beautiful future, the one that used to appear in his dreams but no longer had a place for him in reality.

"Captain Ri Jeong Hyeok, stay safe. I will remember you."
