«Y/n?»

The voice on the other end of the phone was unpleasantly familiar. A shiver ran up her spine, her heartbeat quickened.

«JJ... hi.»

«Hey.» She could clearly hear the smile playing on his lips. «Do you wanna come over? My dad's not home and I thought...» His voice trailed off.

The girl froze. Did she want to see him? Yes. Did she want to see him the same way he wanted to see her? Not really, no. The temptation was strong, her self-control lacking.

«Y/n? You still there?»

«Wha--oh, yeah. Yeah, I'm here.»

«So? Do you want to?» The impatience in his words was obvious.

«I...» She bit on her tongue. «Sure, why not? I'll be there soon.»

Y/n hung up, almost throwing the phone across the room. «Stupid, stupid, stupid

Without enthusiasm, she left her house.

The drive to JJ's place was filled with impolite words and exasperated groans; fortunately, it wasn't that long. Her palms were sweating against the steering wheel, which she gripped until her knuckles turned white.

With trembling legs, Y/n got out of the car. She knocked on his door.

After a second, JJ shouted from inside the house: «It's open!»

Y/n slowly pushed the door open and walked in, reaching the empty living room and continuing towards the boy's bedroom. There he was, sitting on his bed, a beer in his hand.

His face lit up as he reached out to grab her by the waist. «Hey, stranger.» He placed the beer on the bedside table, now wrapping both arms around her. «Where have you been? Haven't heard from you in ages.»

«Actually, JJ...» She slipped cautiously out of his grasp, «I think we need to talk.»

The boy frowned. «What do we need to talk about?»

«I'm sick of this» she explained, «I want a real relationship, JJ. This... this is nothing. I'm lucky to even get a few words out of your mouth when we meet; it's like I have to chase every little connection between us which is not... physical! Every time I try to start a conversation, it turns into--into something else.»

«Me?» He scoffed. «Funny how I'm the one who avoids talking when you share nothing with me. And by nothing, I mean nothing at all! Half the time I can't even imagine what's going through your head.»

«Fine! You wanna know what's going through my head right now

«Yes. Yes, I'd like to.»

«I wish I didn't give a damn about you!» She spat the sentence out as if it were venom, ready to poison whoever it came across first. «There you go, happy now?»

«What are you trying to say, Y/n?» The words tasted bitter in his mouth.

She swallowed the lump in her throat. It was difficult to focus and be so close to him at the same time. Y/n opened her mouth, then closed it; she tried again, but nothing came out. What was she trying to say? Huh. Good question.

JJ stood up. His once ocean blue eyes darkened, his expression cold. «Go away, if you want to. We won't see each other again. I don't even care.»

«Guess I was just one of your many, many pastimes, then. And, by the way, I don't care either!»

His sarcastic laugh spread through the heavy air. «Great.»

«Great.» Y/n turned around and stopped abruptly. After the blood pumping in her ears, she could hear JJ panting in anger. That wasn't how she wanted it to end, was it? Still giving him her back, she admitted: «I never know what you want, or what you need. It's so confusing sometimes. But I want to be what you need, JJ.»

She heard him sigh. «I guess it's time, huh? Gotta tell the truth.» He sighed once more, the tension in his voice grew thicker. «I care about you, every second of every day. I don't know why it's so hard to say...»

Y/n could feel the grin spreading on her features. «If I try to share more of my feelings with you, will you... will you stick around?»

JJ's hand reached hers, he gently pulled her to him. Suddenly, they were at an unbearable close distance. The words whispered in her ear sent a jolt up her back: «Why would I want to go anywhere away from you?»
