"I'm ok, honestly." That was Esmeralda would say when asked by her friends and family how she was feeling. By day she would smile, laugh, even tell jokes.

No one, not even her mind reader uncle, could tell how she was breaking behind closed doors. How every night she would cling to the little pink teddy bear and let the tears dampen the fur. How every breath she took felt like thousands of little razor blades or the tightening feeling in her chest. For hours she would stare at the photos on her camera roll, trying to comprehend how the joyous moments turned into a this tragedy.

How could her boyfriend, well ex-boyfriend, just call it quits after four years together? Leo, the boy behind her current situation, was her first love, in fact the only boy that she ever loved. The pair started off as friends in primary school only for their relationship to blossom into something more when they became 13.

And now, there was nothing.

Esmeralda laid curled into the fetal position on her bed, clutching the little pink teddy bear that Leo gave her for their first anniversary, her tears spilling freely. A soft knock was heard but she made no move to get the door. Moments later she felt the presence of none other than her father standing in the doorway of her room.

"Esmer?" Marcus whispered before moving into the room more, "Are you sleeping?"

Esmeralda tried to lay still and keep her breathing even, praying her father would leave the room before seeing her in such a distressed state. She sniffled, earning a worried whimper from her father. Within seconds he was on her bed, peering down at her.

Marcus stared at his little girl, noting her swollen puffy face and red eyes. "Esmer?" He asked softly, "what's wrong?"

Esmeralda sniffled again. "Nothing," she lied, "everything's fine."

"My sweet angel, I raised you to be many things but I never raised you to be a liar," the ancient king said, tucking a strand of his daughters shoulder length bronze hair behind her ear. "What is the problem?"

Esmeralda sat up, still holding onto her teddy bear, refusing to look into her fathers kind red eyes. Her fingers toyed with the little bow on around the bears neck. Marcus waited, much to his daughter's dismay, his interlocked hands perched on his crossed knees.

The teen was about to answer when her phone chimed. Against her better judgment, she looked at the notification sending her into another spiral of emotion. It was of Leo with his new girlfriend kissing in his profile picture. Only thing that threw her off was that the post read that the couple had been in a relationship for a year now and only now just posted about it.

Esmeralda didn't have to do the math to know that Leo had been cheating on her, making all of his sketchy behavior in the past year make sense now. Anger bubbled to the surface as she read the words that he would often tell her when they were a couple.

'It's just me and you baby, forever and ever.'

Esmeralda threw her phone across the room as fresh tears fell, startling her father. "I HATE HIM!" She cried, flinging the teddy bear into the fireplace along with the picture of her and her ex right after. Her head hung low as the sobs racked her body.

She felt two strong arms pull her towards a cold hard body. The familiar scent of peppermint and sage filling her senses as Marcus held his daughter close.

"He cheated on me," Esmeralda sobbed, "he broke my heart."

Marcus sat holding his daughter. The king had always feared the day she would grow up and discover love. He knew of how it could hurt a person better than most. The king thought back to the promise he made his little girl back when she was four and terrified of dark and thunderstorms, how he promised he would protect her from all things that could cause her harm. The king rubbed his daughters back as she cried into his chest feeling nothing less than as a failure.

"Why?" The girl asked between her cries, "why did this happen?! He promised me forever!"

Marcus rested his head on top of his daughters, unaware of how to respond to her questions. Esmeralda looked up at her dad, her dark brown eyes glistening from her tears and not from the twinkle that was once there. The king kissed his daughters forehead, wishing in that moment that he could take her pain away.

"I know how much this hurts right now," the king stated, gently swaying his daughter from side to side, "but it will get better."

"When?"

"I wish I could give you a definite answer, but I can't," Marcus sighed, "but I can tell you that I will be here to help you through this."

Esmeralda ran her arm across her nose before tucking herself into the safety and comfort of her fathers arms. "Can you just hold me and make the world go away papa?"

"Of course," replied Marcus tightening his hold of her, "and in the morning I'll deal with the boy."

"Are you going to kill him?" She asked softly.

"No," Marcus answered, "but I'll make him wish he was dead."

Esmeralda chuckled. "Thanks papa."
