Thunder rolled as lightning flashed behind the dark clouds that blocked out the stars and moonlight. Rain droplets plopped on the tin awning of the back porch. A lone yellow light shone, attracting gnats and a single moth to it.

On the top step, hugging their knees, sat a teen girl. She stared out into the darkness, every now and then sniffling and rubbing the sleeve of her hoodie across her nose. The girls mother stood by the sliding glass door, looking out at her daughters back, with a mug of lemon tea in her hands. A sudden knock pulled the woman from her thoughts and back into the present.

The older woman peeled herself away from her spot and opened the door. There stood a boy of roughly 16 years of age, his gray hoodie spotted with rain drops and his sneakers caked in mud. On his arm sat a plastic grocery bag, it's contents being the little snack cakes and other snacks that were favored by the person who needed them the most.

The woman smiled. "Seth," she breathed moving to the side to let the young man into her home.

Seth gave a smile, the kind that always managed to lighten the atmosphere of a room and provide ease to its recipient. Seth entered the home he considered his second room, wiping his shoes on the door mat so he wouldn't cause a mess.

"You called saying something was wrong," Seth said pushing the hood of his jacket down before running a hand through his short hair, "did another raccoon end up in the attic?"

The woman shook her head as she looked back to where the backdoor was located. "It's Opal," she clarified, "did something happen at school today? When she got home she immediately went outside, any time I ask her what's wrong she doesn't reply."

Seth thought for a moment. Normally he would be able to explain anything the mother of his best friend but this time he was at a loss for words. He had to stay late for soccer practice, meaning he didn't get the chance to take Opal home.

"Not that I know of," Seth answered rubbing his neck, "but I'm sure that I can figure it out. Where is she?"

The mother ushered the boy to the grand kitchen and pointed to the sliding doors. "She's been out there all afternoon."

Seth set the grocery bag on the island, searching for the zebra cakes and grabbing two of the miniature Dr. Pepper bottles. Seth gave one last smile before walking towards the door, snacks in one hand and the drinks in the other. He pulled the handle with his pinkie and ring finger before gliding onto the porch and sitting next to Opal.

To the untrained eye, Opal would have looked perfectly fine. Her gem green eyes were trained onto nothing and her hands were firmly locked together. But, to Seth, she was a wreck. Seth knew how much Opal hated the stormy weather and how she wouldn't be caught dead outside during a nasty thunderstorm such as tonight's.

"Hey," Seth said softly.

Opal sniffled, "Hey."

Seth offered a zebra cake and drink. Opal shook her head, declining the offer. Seth sat there in silence.

"Wanna talk about it?" Seth asked quietly.

Opal turned her heart shaped face towards her best friend. Instead of answering, Opal did the exact opposite of what she would normally do. She hugged Seth tightly. Seth returned the hug, pulling the girl closer.

"He cheated on me," Opal whispered after a moment of silence.

Seth tightened his hold on her. "I'm sorry," he replied.

"Don't be," Opal sighed, "you said he wasn't any good for me."

Seth sighed through his nose and bite his lip. He remembered that day vividly. He had just come to terms earlier that week that he had feelings for the girl he had known since they were in diapers. He planned on telling Opal about his feelings but she beat him on the draw informing him that she had a date with a local of Forks, Mike Newton.

Opal looked at her friend as she wiped the tears from her face. Seth looked at the girl. "How did you find out?"

"I saw him and Jessica making out at the diner."

Opal sighed as she picked up the little bottle of soda. "I'm sorry boo," Seth said once more, "you deserve better than Mike."

Opal chuckled softly. "Like you?"

Seth whipped his head towards his friend. "What?" He asked.

Opal looked up through her lashes. "Isn't it obvious?" She asked, "I've liked you since we were ten."

"Oh."

Opal looked down. "Sorry."

Seth kissed Opal's cheek. "I like you too."

Opal smiled and pressed her lips to Seth's. The kiss was gentle, as if the pair was testing the waters. The pair pulled away smiling like little kids that were just told that they could have three pieces of their Halloween candy. Seth leaned in once more, sealing his lips with his best friends again, savoring the taste of her mint chapstick. A loud crash of what sounded like a coffee mug colliding with the ground making them jump apart.

The teens turned to see Opal's mom, Pearl, moving away from the glass door and her mug of tea resting in pieces on the hard wood floors.

Seth chuckled, "I guess we don't have to tell your mom we are more than friends now."

Opal laughed. "My mom is probably already figuring out when our wedding will be," she joked.

Seth shook his head and helped Opal to her feet, wrapping an arm around her waist. The pair made their way towards the home.

"Hey," Opal said coming to a stop before opening the patio door.

"Yeah?"

Opal smiled. "We have to tell your mom."

Seth groaned. He always dreaded the day he would have to tell his parents that he was dating, he knew how over protective his mom could be. "We can tell her the day we decide to get married."

Opal laughed, pushing her boyfriend through the door. "I'm sure my mom has already told Mama Sue or is planning to."

Seth groaned again as his phone began to ring with his mother's ringtone. Seth looked over at Pearl, who was busy cleaning the shards of the ceramic cup.

The green eyed woman looked up and winked. "Don't worry you and Opal were your moms OTP."
