CHAPTER FIFTEEN:
THE PERFECT DYNAMIC

WHEN HANK DIDN'T SHOW UP to class the next morning, it was clear what his next intentions were. Aurelia knew all about the argument that had taken place between Charles and Hank, and the bald man was really starting to piss her off. All of the secrets, all of the lies, she couldn't help but wondering if there was something he was keeping from her. If there was something he had kept hidden in hopes of protecting her, just like he had done with Jean, and she wanted to confront him.

Scott sat on her bed, watching as the blonde started pacing back and forth. There were so many thoughts that were constantly screaming at her, and no matter how hard she tried to keep them quiet, they just seemed to grow louder and louder. Curiouser and curiouser. Her hand twirled the golden band around her wrist that kept her powers under control, her eyes constantly darting back and forth in hopes of trying to find the words that so desperately wanted to climb from her mouth.

Scott watched his best friend with a small frown. He knew how much she was worried for Jean, he knew how much Aurelia loved Jean. She was Aurelia's first love. Jean meant so much to Aurelia, and he knew that she was trying to hold back her anger―︎because Aurelia didn't get angry. She didn't. She had never found it in herself to be so mad at someone to the point of wanting to use her powers on them, but by the look on her face, he knew that that was starting to change.

To say he was terrified of seeing Aurelia angry was an absolute understatement. Even if he had never seen the blonde angry, he could tell that she was one of those that didn't get angry often, but when she did, she exploded. And quite frankly, Scott enjoyed his life, and he really didn't want to die by the hands of his best friend. Pressing his lips into a thin line, he watched as Aurelia suddenly stopped and turned to look at him, her blue eyes lit with a fire that made him shift in his spot.

"I shouldn't be angry, right?" Aurelia questioned him, placing her hands on her hips. "I mean, it's not me that Charles lied to. It was Jean."

"Whom of which is your girlfriend that you care so much for that if someone makes her upset, you get upset, because that's the perfect dynamic that you two share." Scott pointed out. Aurelia looked at him and softly sighed. "What's really on your mind, Aria? I mean, besides the whole Jean missing and everything."

"Well, that's now at the front of mind, thanks." Aurelia scoffed, sighing as she leaned against the back of the couch with her head in her hands. She closed her eyes, running her hands through her blonde locks as she sat like that for a moment, trying to collect her thoughts. She softly sighed, opening her eyes as she looked at Scott, and her anger suddenly seemed to be replaced with fear.

"Ari, you can talk to me." Scott frowned. He hated seeing her like this. He couldn't help but wish that Charles hadn't kept something so important hidden from Jean. Because Jean deserved the truth, Jean deserved to be happy, and he knew that Aurelia made Jean happy, just as Jean made Aurelia happy. All he wanted, was to see his best friend smile again, and in order for that to happen, they needed to get Jean back.

"I know." Aurelia clenched her jaw for a moment, swallowing thickly. "I just―︎I want her to come home, Scott. I want her to come back to me, why hasn't she come back to me?" Tears started strolling down her cheeks as she started to sob. Scott stood up, immediately pulling Aurelia into a hug. She held onto him, sobbing roughly into his chest.

He knew she was blaming herself―︎it was a defense mechanism. Aurelia had lost everyone in her life―︎her parents, her sister (who she didn't even know about), and now Jean. She was falling apart right in his arms, and he didn't know how to piece her back together. So instead, he just continued to hug her tightly, whispering over and over that it's going to be okay. That they were going to get Jean back, no matter what it took.

After a few moments, the two were sitting on the couch, Aurelia once again in deep thought as she tried to allow herself a moment to breathe after breaking down―︎something she seemed to be doing a lot of lately. She bit the inside of her cheek, fiddling with her bracelet once more before looking at Scott for a moment before she decided to speak.

"You think he's hiding something from me?" Aurelia's soft voice caused Scott to blink and turn his head to look at her.

     "Who?" Scott frowned.

     "Charles."

"Why do you suspect he's hiding something from you?"

Aurelia shrugged her shoulders. "Scott, my parents are dead. That's not the part that I don't believe. It's just. . . the way he said it. I feel like there's something missing―︎a part of the puzzle that I'm so close to completing. I don't know. I just, I want to ask Charles, but I'm scared that he's going to lie to me."

"Then ask him." Scott turned his body to face the blonde. "It's your life, Ari. You deserve to know the truth. And after what happened with Jean. . . I don't think that Charles would try to pull something like that again." Aurelia deeply frowned as she looked at him. Scott reached out and grabbed Aurelia's hand, giving it a small squeeze. "I'll come with you if you want."

She managed a gentle smile as she squeezed his hand back. "Thanks, Scotty." She softly whispered before nodding her head. "But this is something that I have to do on my own." Scott nodded before watching as she stood up.

"I'll be here, waiting for you when you get back."

She smiled. "I know." And with that, she walked out oft he room and made her way towards Charles in hopes of finding out what really happened that night.
