Lan Zhan came back to a very annoyed Wei Wuxian, standing in the middle of the room, his arms folded on his chest.

- I was dying?  –  he snorted loud.

- Wei Ying....  –  Lan Zhan started.

- You were dying???  –  he grunted louder.

- Wei Ying, I was...

- What?! You were going to tell me? When?!  –  he cried.  –  Why are you like that? Do you really think you can protect me from everyone  and everything??  –  Wei Ying shouted in his face.

- YES!!!  –  the Lan boy shouted back, angrily.

And then he suddenly broke down:

- Yes... I am trying... I will die trying... I have to try... -  Lan Zhan sobbed now.  –  I don't think you understand... I cannot lose you... I can't...  -  he said desperately.

Wei Wuxian approached him and took him in his arms, caressing his hair and whispering in his ear:

- You can't.  No one can. Please, have mercy on me, I am worried sick about you most of the time... have mercy on yourself too, Lan Zhan... Why are you too stubborn to understand that if anything happened to you   –  I'd die too... My foolish love, you are ready to bleed for me, but what happens when you bleed out and I am left all alone in the world again... Tell me what? – he took Lan Zhan's wet face in his hands and kissed the tears away.  –  Pity me, Shizun... I cannot live without you...  -  he whispered.

Lan Zhan nodded and relaxed in his arms. He saw the logic of it all, but it was easier said than done. His body had been in full panic mode for months now – he was on edge, expecting trouble, attacks, danger, from all directions. Wei Ying felt him shivering all over, and led him to the bed.

They lay there for hours that day, never paying attention to who was coming and going, blind to the world, having eyes just for each other, staring into each other's eyes too, kissing and caressing.

Their chests heaved together as they breathed the same air, their hearts synchronized their beats and were beating as one. Their fingers interlaced. Their cores shone bright  –  for anyone who had the sight to see.

They were one.
