"It's just lasagna Chief," I drummed my fingers on the kitchen island, a very boring and disorganized tune coming out from my fingers. "Not a five course meal. Don't tell me this is how you delay your guests. No wonder they never come back after the first date."
"Will you quit yapping." He chortled, his hands moving around expertly in the kitchen. His hands moved around swiftly, putting and adding the finishing touches to the gourmet meal he was making." Not everyone would agree to make a full blown meal as early as one am, you know?"
"You're not making it for just anyone." I smirked." You're making it for me, and I'm special."
"I keep saying this Kid," He dropped a huge plate of the steaming dish in front me, it's delicious aroma wafting through my nostrils and my stomach rumbled in response. "You're taking advantage of our relationship."
"Not listening." I whined, digging into my food. A moan slipped past my lips and my eyes flicked shut in response. Aly was a good baker, and Chief an even better cook. Literally everyone I knew had some level of cooking skill, except me. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Maxim could whip up something too.
Maxim. Why did my train of thoughts wander over to him? He opened up to me just tonight and I wasn't expecting it all. He confided in me about his stalker, not that I didn't already know about it, but I found out something I was pretty sure even the investigative team didn't know about; a girl was now involved, and my stomach churned at what ties could be joining them both.
"Kid?" Chief's voice reached my ears. "Are you listening to me?"
"Do you want to know the truth?" I beamed chewing loudly. Chief's face scrunched up in disgust and I stuck out my tongue. He hated it when I chewed with my mouth open and I on the other hand loved riling him up. "No. I'm busy."
"Busy eating my all of my hardwork." He rolled his eyes, a huge grin breaking out on his face."What's going on in your head, that's making you ignore good ole Chief. Is my company boring now?"
"It couldn't be boring even if we wanted it to." I slapped the beefy hand nearing my plate." It's mine. Go get yours."
"I've really missed you Kid." He said out of the blue. His eyes fell on me and I could see his words were true. "More than you can imagine."
"It's all your fault." I stabbed my utensil further into the bowl. "You were the one who sent me out of here."
"Don't be like that now Kid." He sighed. He reached out to me and his huge palm fell over my left hand. "You know I had to."
"I guess so." I mumbled softly, the images of previous events replaying in my head. His disappointed tone, the pain in his eyes, the anger and agony in his voice. Everything made it's way to my mind, but I pushed them back down immediately. "I guess I understand."
"You do?" His shoulders shook with relief. I guess he'd been holding his breath at some point but I'd only just noticed." How?"
"I made a mistake." I chewed slowly, careful not to spill any on the marble countertop of the kitchen island. Lights bounced off the table and reflected the cream colored walls. They were neat, without any stains whatsoever and I wondered how Chief managed to keep it that way, despite how messy I was. "I shouldn't have hit Susanne that hard and I should have read Max's file properly. I also shouldn't have ignored you the other night and I should have taken responsibility."
"Damn I'm good." He clapped once before breaking out into a full grin. "I practically come up with the best ideas."
"Haha." I rolled my eyes, fighting the urge to smile too. "Maybe though. So I'm not mad. How's Susanne though?"
