Though she wanted life back to “normal”, she had to deal with the evil elephant in the room. Yet, she was coming to terms with her unfortunate circumstances; but, she couldn't just turn the other cheek. She truly trusted Jesse, confided in him, and once upon a time, considered him to be a friend. He was there during a time when she felt like she had no one. Jesse was opportunistic. The turmoil gave him the chance to take advantage of her vulnerabilities. There was plenty of unresolved anger that she had stored away.
Serronie felt guilty enough knowing that she allowed herself to get close enough to depend on him for a short time. She thought about how the nice gestures from Jesse were ploys. He made her question the motives of everyone she had ever surrounded herself with.
She wondered how someone could be so cold and audacious. Because that was Jesse all the way. He smiled in Zachary's face and her face, and he knew that he was the cause of everything wrong between them. He even kept Zachary away, feeding him lies about Serronie wanting nothing to do with him. Just all around dirty.
There was a sense of support since she talked with her dad. Serrano's opinion meant a lot to her, and she didn't want to go public without the blessing of her dad. But then again, what kind of father wouldn't want that? The circumstances made Serronie question premises that were a given and that made her even more upset. Her husband did have a heavy weight on her decision as well, but something about Serrano just solidified everything.
Though Zachary was doing more than well enough financially, both his parents and Serronie's parents insisted on paying for a lawyer. They wanted to be sure to get her the cleverest shark that they could find. Their people wanted to be sure that Serronie wasn't stuck with some half-passed rookie that was afraid of his own shadow. Zachary's father, Phillip, knew some powerful attorneys, and he went straight to the top of the food chain.
Jelasco Graves, he was one of the best. He lived in Tennessee, but he was completely mobile and could be wherever the money needed him to be. The reputation of being a “Southern Slayer” preceded him. His track record was next to none, and his specialty was women's rights. So naturally, he took a special interest in Serronie's case.
